Discord
Discord is an American VoIP and instant messaging social platform. Users have the
ability to communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in
private chats or as part of communities called "servers".
Game developer Hammer & Chisel, now called Discord Inc, initially created Discord for
the MOBA game Fates Forever.
The service has been popularized by eSports and LAN tournament players, including
popular users on the streaming service Twitch and gaming communities such as Star
Citizen. The company, which bears the same name as the service, was founded by
OpenFeint founder Jason Citron, who intends to keep the company independent.
In January 2016, Discord raised an additional $20 million in funding, including an
investment from WarnerMedia (then TimeWarner) In 2019, WarnerMedia Investment
Group was shut down and acquired by AT&T, selling its equity.
Microsoft announced in April 2018 that it will provide Discord support for Xbox Live
users, allowing them to link their Discord and Xbox Live accounts so that they can
connect with their Xbox Live friends list through Discord. In December 2018, the
company announced it raised $150 million in funding at a $2 billion valuation. The round
was led by Greenoaks Capital with participation from Firstmark, Tencent, IVP, Index
Ventures and Technology Opportunity Partners.
In March 2020, Discord changed its motto from "Chat for Gamers" to "Chat for
Communities and Friends", and introduced server templates. This was part of their
response to an increase in users as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of June 2020, Discord announced that it was shifting its focus from video games
specifically to a more comprehensive communication and chat client for all functions,
unveiling its new tagline "Your place to talk," along with a revised website. Among other
planned changes would be reducing the number of internal game jokes it uses in the
client, improving the user integration experience, and increasing server capacity and
reliability.

Reddit
Reddit is an American social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website.
Registered users (commonly referred to as "Redditors") submit content to the site such
as links, text posts, images, and videos, which are then voted up or down by other
members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called
"communities" or "subreddits". Submissions with more upvotes appear towards the top
of their subreddit and, if they receive enough upvotes, ultimately on the site's front page.
Reddit administrators moderate the communities. Moderation is also conducted by
community-specific moderators, who are not Reddit employees.
Reddit was founded by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis
Ohanian, with Aaron Swartz, in 2005. Condé Nast Publications acquired the site in
October 2006. In 2011, Reddit became an independent subsidiary of Condé Nast's
parent company, Advance Publications.
After Huffman and Ohanian left Reddit in 2009, Erik Martin, who joined the company as
a community manager in 2008 and later became general manager in 2011, played a
role in Reddit's growth.
On December 13, 2020, Reddit announced it had acquired short-form video social
platform Dubsmash, hiring its entire team, with the intention of integrating its video
creation tools into Reddit.
