My Last Day at College Page 38

Tim McGraw has beautifully remarked:

“Like an old photograph,

Time can make a feeling fade.
But the memory of happy days
Stays and never fades away.”
In the storehouse of my college memories, the last day at college
occupies a prominent place. Every moment of it is still fresh in the photographic camera of my
mind. My feelings on that day were a mixture of joy and sadness. I was happy because I had
completed a part of my education. I was sad because I was going to leave my friends, my
teachers and my college. All the moments that I spent there would live with me the whole life.
Cesare Pavese has well said:

“We do not remember days; we remember movement.”

College is a place of independence, education and enjoyment. It is a foundation

preparing the youth for the practical knowledge. Students rise from the shyness of boyhood to
the confidence of maturity. It is a mould shaping the future builders of a country. It means a lot
to the students who are new to it. They feel free throwing away the shadows of burdensome
brunt of school life. It is also said that school provides base and college builds the building of
knowledge on it.
It is rightly said:

“There is no knowledge without college.”

Monday, March 24, 2015 was my last day at college. It was a

beautiful day. The morning sky was blue, the sun was shining bright, and the birds were
chirping. I got up early in the morning and rode my bicycle to the college. As I was going to
college, the memories of my first day at college took hold of my mind. I remembered my
excitement and nervousness of that day. I was afraid of the jokes and mockery of senior boys.
Then with a smile, I thought of the time when I myself was a senior student and I had myself
played many jokes on the first year students, filled with these strange thoughts of bliss and
gloom, I reached the college.
Seneca has rightly said:

” Things that were hard to bear are sweet to remember.”

It was a child but a sunny day. The students of first year bad
arranged a farewell party in honor of the outgoing senior students. They were busy in making
arrangements for the party. It was to be held in the college ground. A few of my friends had
already come. We also started making preparations for the party. The principal of our college
was the Chief Guest.

The farewell function started at 10:00 a.m. The Chief Proctor conducted the function as
compare. He greeted us and bade us farewell. On behalf of my class fellows, I thanked our
principal, professors and rest of the non-teaching staff as they were the sailors of our two year
journey at college. I expressed my feelings of gratitude for my learned professors who had been
so helpful and kind to us during our stay at college for two years. I offered my deepest regard to
the worthy principal for his love and kindness to the students. I said that we were departing
with heavy hearts and should ever remain thankful to our teachers for their valuable guidance.
In the end, I quoted Robert Brault:

“The happiest memories are of moments that end when they should have.”

Then the Chief Guest delivered us a farewell speech. His speech was blended
with tender and touching sentiments. It showed his deep love for the students. He advised us to work
hard in life and wished a bright and successful future. Then we had a group photo with our professors
and the worthy principal. We had a sumptuous lunch after that. Those moments are still refresh in the
camera of my mind.
It is rightly said:
“Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I’ll miss you,
Until we meet again!”
After the party, we met our teachers. They wished us best of luck
and advised us work hard. They were a bit sad hopeful for our future at the same time. We took
their autographs in our diaries. Then we had a round of the college to see every nook and
corner of it and fresh the blissful memories once again. We could remember the places we
learned together, ate together, made mischief together, and got punishment together. We
recollected a whole bulk of memories with tears in our eyes and a smile on our faces.
Thomas Ehrilich remarks regarding college education:

“A college education should equip one to entertain three things:

A friend, an idea and oneself.”

Now it was the time to say good-bye to one another. Everyone was a bit sad and emotional. I
also felt a tough of grief and my eyes were slightly wet. We embraced one another for the last
time. Some of the students could not control themselves and started weeping. As I stepped out
for the massive gate of the college, I felt that my heart was full of love for all. There was not
even a bit of malice for anybody. My eyes were wet and my heart crying with emotions:
” Farewell, my friends! Farewell. My foes!

My peace with these, my love with those.”
