information:
Once you have this information, you can use the following formula to calculate the hydraulic capacity of the culvert:
Q = K * A * Rh^(2/3) * S^(1/2)
where:
To calculate the hydraulic radius of the culvert, you can use the following formula:
Rh = A / P
where:
Once you have calculated the hydraulic capacity of the culvert, you can compare it to the existing channel capacity to determine
if the culvert can carry the existing flow. If the hydraulic capacity of the culvert is less than the existing channel capacity, then
the culvert is undersized and will not be able to carry the existing flow.
To check the overtopping scenario, you can use the following formula to calculate the depth of flow over the culvert:
D = (H - Y) + d
where:
The freeboard is the vertical distance between the top of the culvert and the upstream water level. It is important to have
adequate freeboard to prevent overtopping of the culvert.
If the depth of flow over the culvert is greater than the freeboard, then the culvert is overtopping. Overtopping can damage the
culvert and cause flooding.
It is important to note that these calculations are approximate and should be used for preliminary design purposes only. For
more accurate calculations, it is recommended to use a hydraulic modeling software program.
