WARNING:DO NOT GET THE FLUID ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. IF YOU
DO:
- FLUSH IT AWAY WITH CLEAN WATER
- GET MEDICAL AID.

WARNING:WHEN YOU USE COMPRESSED AIR:

- USE THE CORRECT PROTECTION (FACE SHIELD OR GOGGLES)
- DO NOT POINT THE AIRFLOW AT YOURSELF OR OTHER
PERSONS
- DO NOT LET THE PRESSURE BE MORE THAN 30 PSIG (200 KPA).
LOOSE PARTICLES AND/OR HIGH PRESSURE AIR CAN CAUSE
INJURY.

CAUTION: IF YOU DRY MOTORED THE ENGINE OR DID AN ENGINE RUN, MAKE
SURE THAT THE OIL LEVEL IS STABLE BEFORE YOU DO THE
INSPECTION. THE OIL LEVEL BECOMES STABLE ONLY AFTER A
PERIOD OF:
- 30 MINUTES IF YOU DRY-MOTORED THE ENGINE, OR
- 5 MINUTES IF YOU DID AN ENGINE RUN.
THUS, THE LEVEL INDICATIONS ON THE SIGHTGLASS ARE NOT
CORRECT BEFORE THE END OF THIS PERIOD. IF YOU ADD OIL
WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY, FAILURE OF THE IDG CAN OCCUR.

(1) Do a check of the IDG oil-level sightglass in the vertical position:

(a) Make sure that no contamination prevents the correct view of the oil level on
the IDG oil-level sightglass.
(b) If there is contamination, clean the IDG oil-level sightglass with the Non
Aqueous Cleaner-- Petroleum Based - (Material No. 08BBB1).
(c) After you clean the IDG oil-level sightglass:
· Remove the remaining solvent and the contamination with a clean and dry
Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No. 14SBA1), or
· Blow compressed air on the IDG oil-level sightglass with the AIR SOURCE
FILTERED, DRY to dry it.
(2) Let the IDG oil become stable for:
· A minimum of five minutes after the engine shutdown, or
· 30 minutes after the dry motoring of the engine.

TASK 12-32-28-281-001-A
Drain Water Content

WARNING: PUT THE SAFETY DEVICES AND THE WARNING NOTICES IN POSITION
BEFORE YOU START A TASK ON OR NEAR:
- THE FLIGHT CONTROLS
- THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES
- THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
- COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
MOVEMENT OF COMPONENTS CAN KILL OR CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS
AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.

1. Reason for the Job

Refer to the MPD TASK: 281100-01
DRAIN WATER CONTENT
You can do this task together with TASK 12-32-28-281-003-A (Sample Fuel for
Microbiological Contamination Analysis) and TASK 12-32-28-281-802-A (Sample
Fuel for Hydraulic-Oil Contamination Analysis). If you are sampling for microbiological
contamination of fuel do task 12-32-28-281-003-A instead of this task. If you do the
Microbiological/Hydraulic-Oil Contamination Analysis, you must clean the applicable drain
tool and the container as given in the AMM tasks.

NOTE: If possible, Airbus recommends you to do the water drain procedure before the
flight or the refuel procedure. If you do this procedure after the flight or the refuel
procedure, you must wait for one hour for the separation of the water and the fuel.

NOTE: It is permitted to do this procedure when the APU is in operation only if the fuel tank
pumps are set to OFF.

For the gravity procedure, Airbus recommends that there must be more than 10% content
of the fuel in each tank.
If you have less than 10% content of the fuel, then the indirect water drain valves will have
a decreased flow.
It is recommended that you use the suction procedure when you have less than 10%
content of the fuel.

(1) You must obey the fuel safety procedures when you do work on the fuel system
(Ref. AMM TASK 28-00-00-910-001) .
(2) As necessary, use the applicable SAFETY BARRIERS, specified by the operator's
instructions and your local regulations.
(3) In the cockpit, on panel 400VU:
· Make sure that the landing-gear control-lever 6GA is in the DOWN position
· Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the
landing gear.
(4) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the landing
gear doors.
(5) If the fuel temperature is less than 0 DEG.C (32.00 DEG.F) and/or the water drain
valves are frozen, to keep the flight turnaround times, one of the two steps that
follow:
· Do the cold weather maintenance procedure to warm the water drain valve
(Ref. AMM TASK 12-31-28-660-001)
· Remove the fuel samples 60 minutes after the refuel procedure.

NOTE: Removal of the fuel samples in less than 60 minutes will not remove the
water content as satisfactorily as samples removed one hour after the
refuel procedure.

NOTE: Airbus recommends you that not to apply unusually high force to open the
water drain valve.

(6) If the APU is in operation during this procedure, you must make sure that the fuel
tank pumps are set to OFF.

A. Fuel Sampling for Water Contamination
(1) Gravity Procedure:
(a) Make sure that the fuel tanks are filled to a minimum of 10% of capacity. This
is necessary to cover the water drain valve outlet, so that the water drain
valves can operate satisfactorily.
(b) For the wing-tank water drain-valves:

CAUTION:MAKE SURE THAT THE PLUNGER OF THE TOOL ALIGNS

CORRECTLY WITH THE WATER DRAIN VALVE. INCORRECT
ALIGNMENT OF THE TOOL CAN CAUSE:
- THE WATER DRAIN VALVE TO STAY IN THE OPEN
POSITION AFTER THE TOOL IS REMOVED
- A FUEL LEAK.

1 Push the center of the applicable water drain valve with the PURGER -
WATER DRAIN (98A28104000000) :
a Drain approximately 1.0 l (0.26 USgal) of fuel from the water drain
valve.
2 Remove the PURGER - WATER DRAIN (98A28104000000) from the
water drain valve.
(c) For the center-tank water drain-valves:
1 Push the center of the applicable water drain valve with the TOOL -
PURGING (98A28104000002) :
a Drain approximately 1.0 l (0.26 USgal) of fuel from the water drain
valve.
2 Remove the TOOL - PURGING (98A28104000002) from the water drain
valve.
3 Examine the water drain valve for fuel leakage:
a If the water drain valve does leak, use the TOOL -
PURGING (98A28104000002) to push (in) and release (out) the
center of the valve three or four times.
b Make sure that there are no leaks.
c This step is very important at center-tank water-drain-valves 94QM
and 95QM, where access is not easy.
(d) Put the fuel sample into a CONTAINER-CLEAN, STERILIZED,
TRANSPARENT GLASS or CONTAINER-FUEL RESISTANT,

(e) Do the sample removal procedure at all the water drain valves.
(2) Suction Procedure:
(a) If you use the TOOL-PURGING (97A28002117002) , do the steps that follow:
1 You must use an approved type of PUMP - SUCTION (ATEX
APPROVED) for use on a fuel system:
a You must obey the applicable safety precautions.
2 On the TOOL-PURGING (97A28002117002) fully retract the nut (5), the
screw (4) and the plunger assembly (1).

3 Put the hexagonal end of the bush (2) into the bottom of the water drain
valve.
4 Turn the bush (2) through 30 deg (30 deg).

a This causes the plunger (1) to open the drain valve. Fuel can now
flow into the PUMP - SUCTION (ATEX APPROVED).
9 Start the PUMP - SUCTION (ATEX APPROVED).
10 Continuously monitor the fuel flow into the CONTAINER 10 L(2 1/2
USGAL).
11 Drain approximately 1.0 l (0.26 USgal) of fuel (as a sample) from the
drain valve.
12 When you drained sufficient fuel sample, turn the screw (4) counter
clockwise to its stop.
13 Stop the PUMP - SUCTION (ATEX APPROVED).
14 Remove the PUMP - SUCTION (ATEX APPROVED) from the hose (3).
