GENERAL INFORMATION
We are currently the Daily Telegraph Ultratravel Best Small Tour Operator, the Guardian & Observer
Best Small Tour Operator and Wanderlust magazine’s Top Tour Operator 2008. These awards are widely
recognised as being the most respected in the travel industry as they are professional surveys of the

‘Everyone knows the pitfalls of growing a small, successful travel company – the best people are suddenly
AWOL in the Himalaya, customer service suffers and all that founding passion gets drowned in a sea of
paperwork. But apparently Audley Travel hasn’t read the script. Starting out as a handful of Indochina
experts in 1996, in just 12 years it’s grown to a 200-strong team with expertise on six continents – and the
journey has been as smooth and assured as the tailor-made itineraries they offer. The genius is in the detail:
friendly, knowledgeable (and frank) staff who’ve all had first-hand experience of their favoured destinations;
an open invitation for travellers to drop in to the company’s HQ in a 17th-century Oxfordshire woollen mill;
an ever-diversifying range of intriguing
destinations.’

Hong Kong British nationals travelling on leisure can stay in Hong Kong for up to 6 months without a
visa. US and Canadian nationals can stay for up to 3 months visa free.
Important Note: We cannot under any circumstances guarantee that your visa application for any country will be
accepted. However, in our experience refusals are extremely rare. Visa information is given in good faith and is
accurate to the best of our knowledge.
• Your Itinerary - I have set your departure date as 5th August because the BA flight times are far better than
on 6th August.
• This itinerary is a perfect introduction to China - one of the most fascinating and beautiful countries on
earth, with a culture and civilization that pre-dates almost all others. During this memorable journey you will
visit China's most celebrated an iconic sights, such as the legendary Terracotta Warriors, and of course the
Great Wall at Jinshanling. We recommend this section of the Wall as it is less visited by tour groups and the
views are breathtaking here. Beijing is home to so much of China's history, and it is here that you'll visit the
stunning Forbidden City, where Imperial glamour provides a stark contrast to the Communist austerity of
Tiananmen Square, just across Chang'an Avenue.
• The other main focus of your trip is on rural China and its spellbinding scenery. There is no better region for
this than Guilin and the village of Yangshuo, where the stark limestone peaks that rise vertically into the sky
have been an inspiration for Chinese painters and writers for centuries.
• I have also included a trip to Datong, as you requested, from where you will be able to visit the Yungang
Grottoes and the Hanging Monastery. From here you drive onto Pingyao. This is a charming old town which
has achieved World Heritage status and is full of traditional Chinese architecture. Traffic is banned during
the day and walking the city walls is one of the highlights of a visit. As Chinese experiences go, Pingyao is
about as authentic as it gets.
• You finish this amazing journey at vibrant and cosmopolitan Hong Kong, where you'll be able to sightsee and
perhaps shop at your leisure before flying home.
• The Auldley Experience - I'd like here to mention the specialist nature of our service. I personally travel
to China at least once a year to inspect hotels so that I can make recommendations based on personal
experience and design the perfect trip for my clients. We provide a full 'final itinerary' containing a lot of
supplementary information, restaurant recommendations and additional recommendations for your free time.
We also offer 24 hour support when you are on the ground, which is not something every company offers. All
this means that while we are not the cheapest on the market (nor do we aim to be), we believe that we do
offer outstanding value for money and a great service.
• Accommodation - The accommodation I have selected for you are all those either I have stayed in
personally or are recommended by Audley. In the major cities they are well located for the shopping and
entertainment districts and in the smaller towns they are within easy walking distance of the local
attractions.
• In Beijing and Pingyao I have selected a couple of charming guesthouses, which are locally run and offer
some variety on your trip, as in other destinations western style hotels are the order of the day.
• In Hong Kong, the Langham is ideally located in Kowloon, giving easy access to the Star Ferry and Hong
Kong island.
• Costs - I have shown your BA seats as a separate cost as you are looking into the possibility of booking
these yourselves. I am holding seats currently so please let me know as soon as possible if you do not
require me to book the BA flights.

Child in Mongolia
In September 1997, the Foundation established a shelter for street children and orphans in Ulaan Baatar. The
shelter consists of six residential gers (the traditional felt tent of the Mongolian peoples), one guard ger, an
office ger, two joined gers acting as cookhouse and dining room, and one large community ger. In addition, a 40-
foot container, which was sent from Ireland full of clothes and medical supplies, has been transformed into a
shower house with showers, toilets, hand basins and a laundry area.
Each residential ger is staffed by a ger Mother, often a single parent herself, who creates a loving home for the
children. Older children help to care for the younger and assist their ger mother with simple domestic chores. At
school age the children are enrolled alongside their peers at the local district school: learning within the
community and gaining vital qualifications for later adult life. Children below school age attend the Foundation’s
kindergarten, constructed in 2002 on land adjacent to the ger village. The kindergarten also serves the wider
community and provides invaluable pre-school education to children of local families.
The ger village is on the outskirts of Ulaan Baatar and is enclosed with a large 'Hasha' (fence), which helps create
a small community atmosphere. CNCF doctors visit several times per week, and a team of two Managers, both
themselves qualified doctors, are constantly on-hand to advise, protect and encourage the children.
Wherever possible the Foundation seeks to reunite children with their families and assist the family to face the
future together.
It is exciting to be able to see how our money will be put into positive action. We are looking forward to inviting
clients who travel with Audley to visit the gers and in particular the Sunshine Ger Village and meet those children
helped by CNCF.

Beijing Introduction
Although the earliest records show that Beijing had settlements around 1000BC, the city
itself has only been China’s capital for the past 700 years. As the country's political and
cultural centre, with a population of over 15 million people, Beijing is a very active city and
is changing rapidly. The capital is a tourist paradise, providing a vast array of historical and
religious sites along with masterful architecture showing the artistic and cultural side of
China.
Unfortunately, Beijing's transport infrastructure hasn't yet caught up with its rapid
development, and travelling in Beijing can be a cause of frustration due to the high volume
of traffic in the city. The new metro line has eased the situation slightly, but it's still best
to be prepared for traffic jams. When compiling itineraries in Beijing, we do our best to
ensure sightseeing follows the most logical routing to keep the time sitting in traffic to a
minimum.
There are a number of privately owned restaurants and eateries specialising in traditional
northern cuisine, such as the world renowned Beijing Duck or Mongolian Hot Pot. There are
also plenty of back street cafés to be found where prices are still cheap, for example on
Wangfujing Street or around the parklands such as Beihai.
Wangfujing is also a good place for shopping as several large department stores are based
there and are used by both the locals and tourists. Liulichang is Beijing’s antique street
and both Qianmen and Dazhalan offer most items from silk to Chinese medicines.
It was used as the official summer residence by the imperial families of the Qing Dynasty.
Although government affairs were handled here, the Palace’s main purpose was to provide
an idyllic and peaceful retreat for relaxation and play away from the heat of the city. There
are thousands of fascinating sights located among the calm lakes and wooded hills. These
include the 700 metre “Long Corridor” decorated with Chinese mythical scenes, the
“Benevolence & Longevity Hall” where the emperor in residence greeted special envoys and
handled state affairs, and Longevity Hill which offers a marvellous panorama of Kunming
Lake. There is even a Marble Boat, restored by the Empress Dowager in 1888.
Datong Introduction
Located in the north of Shanxi province, on a direct railway line from Beijing, Datong is a
bustling coal-mining city. Formerly the imperial capital of China in AD386, Datong’s
Yungang caves, situated 16km west of the city, house some of the oldest sculptures in
China and are a United Nations World Heritage Site. There are also several delightful
temples and monasteries as well as local backstreets and markets to explore.
The Wooden Pagoda at Yingxian is the oldest, best preserved pagoda in China, built over
900 years ago and without a single nail! Access is only allowed to the second floor due to
internal weight problems, however this still provides you with good views of the
surrounding houses and mountains in the distance.
The Xuankong Hanging Monastery was built over 1400 years ago along the contours of a
steep cliff face. The structure consists of pavilions and small halls connected together by
a one-way system of corridors and winding staircases. One of the most spectacular
monasteries in China, it combines Taoism, Confucism and Buddhism, with Buddha,
Confucius and Laozi all sitting together in one shrine. The monastery is located about 65
km away from Datong.
Pingyao Introduction
In 1997 Pingyao became a Unesco World Heritage Site and the ancient city is extremely well
preserved and the only city in China to be surrounded by completely intact city walls. It
was a former financial centre during the Ming and Qing dynasties and is home to China’s
earliest banks. Many of the old courtyard houses along the main streets have been opened
up as museums or even guesthouses, while the bustling back streets are a hub of local
activity. Pingyao is famous for paper cutting, a skill that has been passed down through
the generations. Paper cuttings of various colours and sizes can be bought from
traditional shops on Ming Qing Jie, Pingyao's central street. There are also many antique
shops and restaurants along this bustling street.

Xian is the capital of Shaanxi Province and boasts a population of 6 million. A small
percentage of its people are Islamic, and the mosques and markets hidden in the back
streets of the Muslim Quarter make up one the city’s most interesting attractions. The city
is one of only a handful in China that retains their original city walls, dating back to the
time of the first Ming emperor, Hong Wu. Despite these other attractions, however, Xian
remained a relative backwater until the unearthing of the Terracotta Army in the early 70s.
It now draws visitors from all over the world, and rates as of one of China’s most
celebrated destinations.

Chengdu Introduction
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and like most other major Chinese cities,
boasts a lengthy history of 2500 years, mostly associated with the arts and craft trade. The
city has a similar layout to that of Beijing, centred round Tianfu Square with it’s Chairman
Mao statue. Although Chengdu is rapidly modernising, there are some lovely treelined
avenues, back streets with delightful old wooden houses and bustling temples and
monasteries to explore.
Chengdu people are famous throughout China for their relaxed, laid-back attitude to life,
and the city’s streets are lined with teahouses where people will spend their afternoons
drinking tea, eating sunflower seeds, having their fortunes told and playing mahjong. There
are many small restaurants specialising in wonderful spicy Sichuan cuisine and for a true
taste of the region don't forget to try the Sichuan Hotpot, though be warned, this chilli
soup is hot!

Guilin Introduction
Situated in the northeast of Guangxi Province, Guilin is an ancient cultural city. Famed for
scenery unparalleled in China, its green hills, fantastic caves and charming rock formations
can be found along the Li River. Guilin has a cultural history of over two thousand years
and has been a favourite subject of painters and poets for centuries. The city was founded
during the Qin Dynasty and became the provincial capital under the Ming Emperors until
1914 when it was replaced by the city of Nanning.
After lunch onboard the ship visitors disembark the cruise at Yangshuo and are
immediately greeted by a small local market. After looking around the market you can walk
up to your hotel, if you are staying in Yangshuo, or visit the local area with your guide.
It is possible to get good quality cotton garments made up quickly at little cost. When
buying souvenirs you would be advised to wait until late afternoon or early evening, after
the main tourist period, when cheaper prices are on offer. It is advisable to bargain with
shop keepers and stallholders.

Built up around Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Island is famed for its spectacular views of
glittering skyscrapers, crowded markets, shopping, fast living, and the wonderful
juxtaposition of ancient and modern. Though fast being caught by that of Shanghai, the
view from the harbour at night remains one of the wonders of modern Asia. Across the
harbour is the Kowloon side, which offers fabulous views across to the skyline, as well as
some great shopping and local markets. The outlying islands offer tranquillity away from
the bustle of the city, and have beautiful countryside dotted with temples to explore at
your leisure.
Hong Kong is truly a diner's paradise, with some of the world's finest restaurants offering
fabulous Chinese and international cuisine against the spectacular backdrop of the city's
glittering harbour and skyscrapers. Hong Kong's array of world-renowned hotels, the
Mandarin Oriental, the Peninsula and the InterContinental (formerly The Regent) amongst
many others, are home to any number of fine restaurants. We'll provide details of some of
our favourites before you travel; we can also book tables for you should you require -
please speak to your specialist to arrange this.
Start your first day by taking in some of the classic views of Hong Kong from the harbour.
This can be done by taking a Star Ferry hour long cruise around the harbour, which departs
from many points around the harbour. Alternatively, the regular ferry service which criss-
crosses the harbour allows you to take in the harbour front.
After this take a ride on the historic peak tram (actually a funicular railway but generally
known as the peak tram). Take the tram up Victoria peak for fabulous views over the whole
of Hong Kong. There are many restaurants at the top of the Peak if you want to stop for
lunch.
In the afternoon, do a spot of shopping. There are many options for shopping on Hong
Kong - from top end luxury shops on Hong Kong Island, to lively Chinese markets on the
Kowloon side, to antiques on the Hollywood Road.
At 8pm every day, the city puts on a light show, 'A Symphony of Lights'. Take in this
spectacle either from the cross-harbour ferry, or from one of the many bars or restaurants
with fine views on the Kowloon side.

• All flight times are local.

H EALTH
It is essential that you see your GP or a travel clinic before travelling to make sure that you have taken all the
necessary health precautions. Some vaccinations require more than one visit with a period of weeks between
injections. You should visit your GP at least six weeks before departure. For up to date medical advice you
may wish to call the Medical Advisory Service for Travellers Abroad (MASTA).
High altitude
Your itinerary may include sections where the altitude exceeds 10,000 feet (3,048 metres). If you suffer from
circulation, heart or respiratory problems we advise that you consult with your doctor before confirming your
booking.
S MOKING
The vast majority of airlines do not permit smoking on the aircraft. At the request of the majority of our clients
we do not allow smoking on any form of transport used for our escorted group tours. Stops are regularly made
where you will be able to smoke. For smokers travelling on a tailor-made tour we request that you check with
your driver or guide whether smoking is permitted in the vehicle.
TRAVEL ADVICE
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice Unit monitors all overseas destinations and offers safety
advice to British travellers. You can contact the service on 0845 850 2829 or visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel
We are able to obtain visas on your behalf, please ask for details at the time of booking. Non-British passport
holders should check with the relevant embassies as visa requirements may be different to that of British
passport holders. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct documentation and visa stamp(s).
Flight amendments
We generally use special ‘inclusive tour’ fares when we purchase your air tickets from the airlines. While these
fares are very good value they are inflexible in terms of changes and offer no refunds once the tickets are issued.
Once your flight is confirmed the airlines will charge an amendment fee or insist on the purchase of a completely
new ticket if you make changes.
Internal flights
Smaller local airlines are often more likely to change their schedule at short notice. We will endeavour to inform
you of any changes in advance of travelling but this may not always be possible.
HOTEL INFORMATION
There is frequently confusion over the terminology used for bed arrangements in hotel rooms. A ‘double’ is
recognised as meaning a room with a double bed, this may be two single beds pushed together. A ‘twin’ is a
room with two single beds. Please note that all rooms are allocated at the discretion of the hotel and cannot be
guaranteed.
Single rooms
Single rooms tend to be smaller than double or twin rooms, however, many hotels do not have single rooms, in
which case you will be allocated a twin or double room.
