We are currently the Daily Telegraph Ultratravel Best Small Tour Operator, the Guardian & Observer
Best Small Tour Operator and Wanderlust magazine’s Top Tour Operator 2008. These awards are widely
recognised as being the most respected in the travel industry as they are professional surveys of the
publication’s readerships. When choosing which tour operator to travel with, we hope you find these awards
are an additional re-assurance of the quality of service you can expect from Audley.

‘Everyone knows the pitfalls of growing a small, successful travel company – the best people are suddenly
AWOL in the Himalaya, customer service suffers and all that founding passion gets drowned in a sea of
paperwork. But apparently Audley Travel hasn’t read the script. Starting out as a handful of Indochina
experts in 1996, in just 12 years it’s grown to a 200-strong team with expertise on six continents – and the
journey has been as smooth and assured as the tailor-made itineraries they offer. The genius is in the detail:
friendly, knowledgeable (and frank) staff who’ve all had first-hand experience of their favoured destinations;
an open invitation for travellers to drop in to the company’s HQ in a 17th-century Oxfordshire woollen mill;
an ever-diversifying range of intriguing
destinations.’

Mr D & Mrs C Bartlett
PREFERENCES, REQUIREMENTS & PLANNING
In preparing your plans I have taken into account the following information:

• Your Itinerary - I have set your departure date as 5th August because the BA flight times are far better than
on 6th August.

• This itinerary is a perfect introduction to China - one of the most fascinating and beautiful countries on
earth, with a culture and civilization that pre-dates almost all others. During this memorable journey you will
visit China's most celebrated an iconic sights, such as the legendary Terracotta Warriors, and of course the
Great Wall at Jinshanling. We recommend this section of the Wall as it is less visited by tour groups and the
views are breathtaking here. Beijing is home to so much of China's history, and it is here that you'll visit the
stunning Forbidden City, where Imperial glamour provides a stark contrast to the Communist austerity of
Tiananmen Square, just across Chang'an Avenue.

• The other main focus of your trip is on rural China and its spellbinding scenery. There is no better region for
this than Guilin and the village of Yangshuo, where the stark limestone peaks that rise vertically into the sky
have been an inspiration for Chinese painters and writers for centuries.

• I have also included a trip to Datong, as you requested, from where you will be able to visit the Yungang
Grottoes and the Hanging Monastery. From here you drive onto Pingyao. This is a charming old town which
has achieved World Heritage status and is full of traditional Chinese architecture. Traffic is banned during
the day and walking the city walls is one of the highlights of a visit. As Chinese experiences go, Pingyao is
about as authentic as it gets.

• You finish this amazing journey at vibrant and cosmopolitan Hong Kong, where you'll be able to sightsee and
perhaps shop at your leisure before flying home.
• The Auldley Experience - I'd like here to mention the specialist nature of our service. I personally travel
to China at least once a year to inspect hotels so that I can make recommendations based on personal
experience and design the perfect trip for my clients. We provide a full 'final itinerary' containing a lot of
supplementary information, restaurant recommendations and additional recommendations for your free time.
We also offer 24 hour support when you are on the ground, which is not something every company offers. All
this means that while we are not the cheapest on the market (nor do we aim to be), we believe that we do
offer outstanding value for money and a great service.
• Accommodation - The accommodation I have selected for you are all those either I have stayed in
personally or are recommended by Audley. In the major cities they are well located for the shopping and
entertainment districts and in the smaller towns they are within easy walking distance of the local
attractions.

• In Beijing and Pingyao I have selected a couple of charming guesthouses, which are locally run and offer
some variety on your trip, as in other destinations western style hotels are the order of the day.

• In Hong Kong, the Langham is ideally located in Kowloon, giving easy access to the Star Ferry and Hong
Kong island.
• Costs - I have shown your BA seats as a separate cost as you are looking into the possibility of booking
these yourselves. I am holding seats currently so please let me know as soon as possible if you do not
require me to book the BA flights.

result in the loss of confirmed arrangements. Where this situation arises, we reserve the right to ask you to make
payment of the requested sum within a stipulated period and prior to balance due date. We will of course
endeavour to avoid doing so if we can. Any such part payment will be treated as part of your deposit for the

CHRISTINA NOBLE CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION
A UDLEY T RAVEL AND R ESPONSIBLE T RAVEL
Audley’s responsible travel policy has recently seen a significant change; whilst the company as a whole has been
supporting carbon reduction projects through Friends of Conservation since 2005, each individual department
has now also been given the opportunity to support a charity of their choice with a yearly financial donation.
Here in the North and Central Asia Department we have researched many different charities and, after much
discussion, have elected to support the Christina Noble Foundation, working with children in Mongolia.

T HE C HRISTINA N OBLE C HILDREN ’ S F OUNDATION AND A UDLEY ’ S C ONTRIBUTION

The Christina Noble Children's Foundation (CNCF) is dedicated to helping children in need with education,
medical care, social opportunities, and job placement. Set up by patron, Christina Noble in 1997, when she
visited Mongolia, the foundation helps impoverished children, especially street children, orphans and prison
children in the capital, Ulaan Bataar. By setting up and maintaining schools, training young people in traditional
skills, so that they can become self-sufficient in a variety of both traditional and modern environments and by
providing sanitation, housing, and safe community spaces, CNCF touches the lives of many disadvantaged
families in Mongolia.

Child in Mongolia

In September 1997, the Foundation established a shelter for street children and orphans in Ulaan Baatar. The
shelter consists of six residential gers (the traditional felt tent of the Mongolian peoples), one guard ger, an
office ger, two joined gers acting as cookhouse and dining room, and one large community ger. In addition, a 40-
foot container, which was sent from Ireland full of clothes and medical supplies, has been transformed into a
shower house with showers, toilets, hand basins and a laundry area.

Each residential ger is staffed by a ger Mother, often a single parent herself, who creates a loving home for the
children. Older children help to care for the younger and assist their ger mother with simple domestic chores. At
school age the children are enrolled alongside their peers at the local district school: learning within the
community and gaining vital qualifications for later adult life. Children below school age attend the Foundation’s
kindergarten, constructed in 2002 on land adjacent to the ger village. The kindergarten also serves the wider
community and provides invaluable pre-school education to children of local families.

The ger village is on the outskirts of Ulaan Baatar and is enclosed with a large 'Hasha' (fence), which helps create
a small community atmosphere. CNCF doctors visit several times per week, and a team of two Managers, both
themselves qualified doctors, are constantly on-hand to advise, protect and encourage the children.
Wherever possible the Foundation seeks to reunite children with their families and assist the family to face the
future together.

Tailor-Made Itinerary to China and Hong Kong for

Mr D & Mrs C Bartlett
O UR CONTRIBUTION
The Sunshine Ger Village proved so successful that CNCF set up the Give a Ger fund, which is an emergency fund
established to provide families in danger of becoming homeless, or otherwise inadequately or dangerously
accommodated, with a home. Many of these families live on the street, in appalling conditions. A ger, with basic
furniture, can be purchased in Mongolia for USD900. IN 2003 the fund purchased gers for 51 families in Ulaan
Baatar and in 2004 the campaign was extended to include the countryside, with a total of 53 families being
assisted with ger housing. The gift of a ger does far more than simply remove children from squalid and
unhealthy living conditions. It gives them a new start and hope for a better future. Our department will make a
£500 annual donation to CNCF and this will buy a new ger for a family. Further donations will help to furnish the
ger and provide essential items for the children. We will receive progress reports about the families in the gers
and look forward to letting you know about how they are getting on with their education and welfare.

It is exciting to be able to see how our money will be put into positive action. We are looking forward to inviting
clients who travel with Audley to visit the gers and in particular the Sunshine Ger Village and meet those children
helped by CNCF.

YOUR ITINERARY IN DETAIL

Wednesday, 05 L ONDON H EATHROW T ERMINAL : 5 TO B EIJING
August 2009 British Airways flight - Flt No: BA 39 - Dep: 1640 - Arr: 0930 - (next day)
Economy class; Non-stop flight;

Thursday, 06 C HINA I NTRODUCTION

August 2009 Home to a billion people and a thousand landscapes, China's beauty and contradictions
have fascinated visitors since the days of Marco Polo and the Silk Route. It is the relics of
3,000 years of history - the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Army - that
draw us in, and the magical landscapes we discover that capture the soul and make us long
to return.
Eternal China finds its contrast in the modern metropolises of Shanghai and Hong Kong,
embracing the global economy while clinging to a communist past. Nowhere else in the
world can offer such diversity of people, places and history, or show us such marvels of
man-made and natural splendour.

Beijing Introduction
Although the earliest records show that Beijing had settlements around 1000BC, the city
itself has only been China’s capital for the past 700 years. As the country's political and
cultural centre, with a population of over 15 million people, Beijing is a very active city and
is changing rapidly. The capital is a tourist paradise, providing a vast array of historical and
religious sites along with masterful architecture showing the artistic and cultural side of
China.

Unfortunately, Beijing's transport infrastructure hasn't yet caught up with its rapid
development, and travelling in Beijing can be a cause of frustration due to the high volume
of traffic in the city. The new metro line has eased the situation slightly, but it's still best
to be prepared for traffic jams. When compiling itineraries in Beijing, we do our best to
ensure sightseeing follows the most logical routing to keep the time sitting in traffic to a
minimum.

There are a number of privately owned restaurants and eateries specialising in traditional
northern cuisine, such as the world renowned Beijing Duck or Mongolian Hot Pot. There are
also plenty of back street cafés to be found where prices are still cheap, for example on
Wangfujing Street or around the parklands such as Beihai.

Wangfujing is also a good place for shopping as several large department stores are based
there and are used by both the locals and tourists. Liulichang is Beijing’s antique street
and both Qianmen and Dazhalan offer most items from silk to Chinese medicines.

An infamous name after the pro-democracy protests of 1989, Tiananmen Square is
incredibly vast, accommodating a million people or troops. There is a flag raising and
lowering ceremony at dawn and dusk performed by expertly drilled troops in front of the
Gate of Heavenly Peace, where Mao proclaimed the Peoples Republic of China on 1st
October 1949. The square is also home to the late Chairman Mao’s mausoleum where you
can file past the man himself and consider his enormous contribution to China: 70% right

Closed to the world for over 500 years, and home to emperors from the Ming and Qing
Dynasties, the Forbidden City is a truly fascinating place. The buildings are mostly empty
as most of the contents have now been removed and placed in museums. However, the
architecture and history of the city provides a detailed insight into the curious lives and
customs of the past emperors who ruled from within its walls.

Located in the Haidian district in the north of Beijing, the Palace is a classical imperial

It was used as the official summer residence by the imperial families of the Qing Dynasty.
Although government affairs were handled here, the Palace’s main purpose was to provide
an idyllic and peaceful retreat for relaxation and play away from the heat of the city. There
are thousands of fascinating sights located among the calm lakes and wooded hills. These
include the 700 metre “Long Corridor” decorated with Chinese mythical scenes, the
“Benevolence & Longevity Hall” where the emperor in residence greeted special envoys and
handled state affairs, and Longevity Hill which offers a marvellous panorama of Kunming

Saturday, 08 F ULL DAY EXCURSION TO THE G REAT W ALL AT J INSHANLING
August 2009 private excursion with your driver and guide
Cited by astronauts as one of the two man-made features on earth visible from the moon,
the wall is also a magnificent piece of architecture built over the course of two thousand
years to defend against the ‘barbarians’ of the north and west. Stretching for over 6,000
km to the Gobi desert in the far west, the Great Wall remains one of the world’s true must-
see sights. There are several sections of the Great Wall open to the public. Our
recommendation is for a visit to the quieter section at Jinshanling, which though further
from Beijing, approx 3 hours drive, offers the visitor a far more atmospheric and impressive
experience. The main section at Badaling is situated approximately 45 minutes from
Beijing. This is the most popular section to visit and, as a result, hordes of tourists ascend
the wall making it difficult for individuals to appreciate the true scale and beauty of the
structure itself.

For a different insight into Chinese religion and history, a popular place to visit is the
Temple of Heaven. Set in a 267 hectare park, its original function was to provide a vast
stage for the Emperor who came to pray for good harvests, atonement for the sins of his
people and to seek divine clearance from the gods. The temple includes a 65 metre 'Echo
Wall' designed in such a fashion that a whisper is able travel from one end to the other, the
'Triple Echo Stones' designed to affect certain acoustics, and the 'Round Stone Altar'
designed to boost the emperor’s voice to over 9 times its normal volume.

There are a total of 51,000 ornate statues carved into the rock ranging from 2cm to

Today you travel on from Datong to Pingyao by car, taking in the famous Hanging
Monastery and Wooden Pagoda along the way.

The Wooden Pagoda at Yingxian is the oldest, best preserved pagoda in China, built over
900 years ago and without a single nail! Access is only allowed to the second floor due to
internal weight problems, however this still provides you with good views of the
surrounding houses and mountains in the distance.

The Xuankong Hanging Monastery was built over 1400 years ago along the contours of a
steep cliff face. The structure consists of pavilions and small halls connected together by
a one-way system of corridors and winding staircases. One of the most spectacular
monasteries in China, it combines Taoism, Confucism and Buddhism, with Buddha,
Confucius and Laozi all sitting together in one shrine. The monastery is located about 65
km away from Datong.

Pingyao Introduction
In 1997 Pingyao became a Unesco World Heritage Site and the ancient city is extremely well
preserved and the only city in China to be surrounded by completely intact city walls. It
was a former financial centre during the Ming and Qing dynasties and is home to China’s
earliest banks. Many of the old courtyard houses along the main streets have been opened
up as museums or even guesthouses, while the bustling back streets are a hub of local
activity. Pingyao is famous for paper cutting, a skill that has been passed down through
the generations. Paper cuttings of various colours and sizes can be bought from
traditional shops on Ming Qing Jie, Pingyao's central street. There are also many antique
shops and restaurants along this bustling street.

Pingyao has a lot to offer the visitor. The city wall was originally built 2500 years ago and
renovated during the early Ming Dynasty. The wall is over six thousand metres long and is
reputed to be the only surviving city wall in China which is still completely intact. A
rickshaw tour (not included) or walk along the city wall offers good views of the city’s
courtyards and temple rooftops. Visit the Qingxuguan Taoist temple, with its many
beautiful stone and wood carvings and a small exhibition. Then move onto the Huabei
Sanjie Biaoju Museum which was an early bank, with old cheques and receipts, weapons
and delivery carts on display, as well as antique furniture. Rishengchang Financial House
Museum is the oldest bank in the city and is now an excellent museum. During its heyday
it had 57 branches all over China and its business clients included the Qing Government.
The Armed Escort museum came about in Pingyao's heyday when it was China's central
banking city. The escorts were highly trained in martial arts and would travel with the gold
and silver from town to town. The government building is also another interesting place to
visit if you have enough time and is just outside of the central area. It used to house all
the trials that took place and still is in use as a court. You can see the marks on the
ground where the guilty or the defendants kneeled over the years in front of the judge.
Pingyao is also a great place to pick up knick-knacks and antiques - although don't be
surprised to find out that some of the "antiques" aren't as old as they sometimes look!

Xian Introduction
Xian (or Chang-An as it was originally known) is China’s ancient capital and the starting
point of the Silk Road. Though it has faded from prominence since the halcyon days of the
Tang dynasty, it remains the pivotal centre of politics, economy and culture for Northwest
China.

Xian is the capital of Shaanxi Province and boasts a population of 6 million. A small
percentage of its people are Islamic, and the mosques and markets hidden in the back
streets of the Muslim Quarter make up one the city’s most interesting attractions. The city
is one of only a handful in China that retains their original city walls, dating back to the
time of the first Ming emperor, Hong Wu. Despite these other attractions, however, Xian
remained a relative backwater until the unearthing of the Terracotta Army in the early 70s.
It now draws visitors from all over the world, and rates as of one of China’s most
celebrated destinations.

August 2009 private excursion with your vehicle, driver and guide.
Leaving the city, visitors drive to the area where the army was first discovered in 1974.
What was finally unearthed proved to be one of the 20th century’s greatest archaeological
finds, and ranks with the Great Wall and the Forbidden City as one of China’s most potent
images. During years of excavation, rank after rank of life-size terracotta warriors were
discovered, each unique, built over two thousand years before to guard the tomb of
Emperor Qin Shihuang. In the brief and tyrannical 14 year reign of the Qin dynasty,
Emperor Qin Shihuang succeeded in unifying the Chinese empire for the first time,
beginning the construction of the Great Wall and producing a tomb of such scale that even
now new vaults are waiting to be unearthed.
Such was the cruelty and severity of his regime, however, that he was soon overthrown;
making way for the Han dynasty which was to last for four hundred years.
Before seeing the army, a small film is viewed in a 360- degree auditorium. The film depicts
life during the Qin dynasty with battles and ceremonies reconstructed, giving visitors a
fascinating insight into the period. The Terracotta Warriors are viewed around the edges of
the vast pit. Plaques explain the intricate detail of the warriors, horses and chariots. After
the discovery of the main army, two more chambers were discovered which are also on
display.

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and like most other major Chinese cities,
boasts a lengthy history of 2500 years, mostly associated with the arts and craft trade. The
city has a similar layout to that of Beijing, centred round Tianfu Square with it’s Chairman
Mao statue. Although Chengdu is rapidly modernising, there are some lovely treelined
avenues, back streets with delightful old wooden houses and bustling temples and
monasteries to explore.

Chengdu people are famous throughout China for their relaxed, laid-back attitude to life,
and the city’s streets are lined with teahouses where people will spend their afternoons
drinking tea, eating sunflower seeds, having their fortunes told and playing mahjong. There
are many small restaurants specialising in wonderful spicy Sichuan cuisine and for a true

Leshan is 165 kilometres from Chengdu and located in the south of Sichuan Province. The
city is famous for its huge seated image of Maitreya. Carved within a cliff face overlooking
the confluence of the Dadu and Min rivers, at 71 m it is one of the largest Buddhas in the
world. Begun in 713 AD and taking nearly 100 years to build, it was hoped that Buddha’s
presence would bring safety to that section of the river. The statue’s ears alone are 7
metres high and it is said that ten people could have a picnic on his big toe, measuring a
massive 8.4 metres. Inside the body and largely hidden from view is a remarkable water
drainage system engineered to prevent weathering. The Buddha can be viewed both by boat
from the river and from steps that wind their way from up near his ear down the side to his
feet.

During the day you will visit the Grand Buddha and take a cruise on the river before

Yangshuo Introduction
The small town of Yangshuo, set amidst vertical limestone pinnacles, has a relaxed charm.
Resting beside the Li River, it is ideally placed to enable visitors to explore the strikingly
beautiful countryside of Guangxi Province. The town itself is very laid back and the mix of
small western-style cafes - with good, inexpensive local food - offers a relaxing respite.
Many visitors prefer to explore Yangshuo and its scenic beauty by bike, which can be hired
cheaply on a daily basis. A walk around the town is also enjoyable. West Street has various
tourist shops with good quality items at reasonable prices.

It is possible to get good quality cotton garments made up quickly at little cost. When
buying souvenirs you would be advised to wait until late afternoon or early evening, after
the main tourist period, when cheaper prices are on offer. It is advisable to bargain with

Hong Kong Introduction
Located at the south-eastern tip of China, Hong Kong adjoins the province of Guangdong
and has a population of over 6 million people, 96 per cent of whom are Chinese. Hong
Kong Island and Kowloon were originally ceded to the British following the Opium Wars of
the 1800's, and from a minor fishing village steadily developed into one of Asia's greatest
trading hubs. Its sovereignty reverted back to China in July 1997 and is now under a unique
arrangement referred to as 'one country two systems'. It has become a Special
Administrative Region enjoying a high degree of autonomy.

Built up around Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Island is famed for its spectacular views of
glittering skyscrapers, crowded markets, shopping, fast living, and the wonderful
juxtaposition of ancient and modern. Though fast being caught by that of Shanghai, the
view from the harbour at night remains one of the wonders of modern Asia. Across the
harbour is the Kowloon side, which offers fabulous views across to the skyline, as well as
some great shopping and local markets. The outlying islands offer tranquillity away from
the bustle of the city, and have beautiful countryside dotted with temples to explore at
your leisure.

Hong Kong is truly a diner's paradise, with some of the world's finest restaurants offering
fabulous Chinese and international cuisine against the spectacular backdrop of the city's
glittering harbour and skyscrapers. Hong Kong's array of world-renowned hotels, the
Mandarin Oriental, the Peninsula and the InterContinental (formerly The Regent) amongst
many others, are home to any number of fine restaurants. We'll provide details of some of

Below are some suggestions to fill your time whilst in Hong Kong. We will provide you with
more details about these suggestions before you travel.

Start your first day by taking in some of the classic views of Hong Kong from the harbour.
This can be done by taking a Star Ferry hour long cruise around the harbour, which departs
from many points around the harbour. Alternatively, the regular ferry service which criss-
crosses the harbour allows you to take in the harbour front.

After this take a ride on the historic peak tram (actually a funicular railway but generally
known as the peak tram). Take the tram up Victoria peak for fabulous views over the whole
of Hong Kong. There are many restaurants at the top of the Peak if you want to stop for
lunch.

In the afternoon, do a spot of shopping. There are many options for shopping on Hong
Kong - from top end luxury shops on Hong Kong Island, to lively Chinese markets on the
Kowloon side, to antiques on the Hollywood Road.

At 8pm every day, the city puts on a light show, 'A Symphony of Lights'. Take in this
spectacle either from the cross-harbour ferry, or from one of the many bars or restaurants
with fine views on the Kowloon side.

to offer the rest of the group. We may request that you provide a letter from your doctor confirming your fitness
to travel.

High altitude
Your itinerary may include sections where the altitude exceeds 10,000 feet (3,048 metres). If you suffer from
circulation, heart or respiratory problems we advise that you consult with your doctor before confirming your
booking.

S MOKING
The vast majority of airlines do not permit smoking on the aircraft. At the request of the majority of our clients
we do not allow smoking on any form of transport used for our escorted group tours. Stops are regularly made
where you will be able to smoke. For smokers travelling on a tailor-made tour we request that you check with
your driver or guide whether smoking is permitted in the vehicle.

HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS

Each country has its own regulations and enforcement levels relating to health and safety standards. These do
not always match the very high standards we are used to in the UK. We therefore recommend that you follow a
few precautionary safety procedures. Always check where the nearest fire exit is and how to raise the fire alarm.
Do not enter a swimming pool before checking the water depth first. For more suggestions please see the
Important Information section in your Travel Organiser.

TRAVEL ADVICE
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice Unit monitors all overseas destinations and offers safety
advice to British travellers. You can contact the service on 0845 850 2829 or visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel

PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION FOR BRITISH CITIZENS
Passengers must hold a passport which is valid for at least six months following the return date of your holiday.
British passport holders (full British Citizens) currently require visas, in advance of travel, for the following
destinations featured in our brochures: Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Burma, China, Cuba, Egypt,
Gabon, Georgia, Jordan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nepal,
Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Russia, São Tomé & Príncipe, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Tibet,
Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia (visitors to Libya must obtain an official invitation.
Please ask for details at the time of booking).

We are able to obtain visas on your behalf, please ask for details at the time of booking. Non-British passport
holders should check with the relevant embassies as visa requirements may be different to that of British
passport holders. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct documentation and visa stamp(s).

FLIGHTS AND AIRLINES

The difference between a direct flight and a non-stop flight can cause confusion. To clarify, on a direct flight no
change of aircraft is scheduled but touchdowns will be made en route either to refuel or to board or disembark.
On non-stop flights no change of aircraft is required and no stops are made en route. Virtually all of the flights
that we use are direct and many are non-stop. Exact details will be given with your itinerary.

Premium economy, business and first class

If you require business or first class flights these can be arranged on most airlines at very competitive rates.
Premium economy can be arranged on certain airlines, please call us for details.

Specific seat requests

We will do all we can to try to reserve a specific seat for you, if you have a preference. However, whilst airlines
may allow us to request seats, they will not guarantee any specific seat reservation. If this is important to you, it
is always best to arrive for your flight early, regardless of having made this request in advance. Please make it
clear on your booking form if you have a specific request.

Flight amendments
We generally use special ‘inclusive tour’ fares when we purchase your air tickets from the airlines. While these
fares are very good value they are inflexible in terms of changes and offer no refunds once the tickets are issued.
Once your flight is confirmed the airlines will charge an amendment fee or insist on the purchase of a completely
new ticket if you make changes.

Internal flights
Smaller local airlines are often more likely to change their schedule at short notice. We will endeavour to inform
you of any changes in advance of travelling but this may not always be possible.

Frequent flyer clubs

If you collect points through any of the airline frequent flyer clubs please provide your membership details on
the booking form and we will ensure that these are recorded against your flight reservation. Please note that on
some of our specially negotiated ‘inclusive tour’ fares points are not always awarded.

HOTEL INFORMATION
There is frequently confusion over the terminology used for bed arrangements in hotel rooms. A ‘double’ is
recognised as meaning a room with a double bed, this may be two single beds pushed together. A ‘twin’ is a
room with two single beds. Please note that all rooms are allocated at the discretion of the hotel and cannot be
guaranteed.

Single rooms
Single rooms tend to be smaller than double or twin rooms, however, many hotels do not have single rooms, in
which case you will be allocated a twin or double room.

BROCHURE AND ITINERARY ACCURACY

We thoroughly check all the information that is included within our brochures and individual tour itineraries,
however, changes do occur. Airlines may change their schedules, roads may close and government regulations
may alter. Should there be any changes to the travel arrangements you have booked we will do our best to keep
you informed of the situation prior to departure.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

Special diets should be requested on the booking form; however, it is unrealistic to expect special diets to be
catered for in some of the destinations we feature. We will advise the hotels and airlines of your request but we
cannot guarantee their availability.

other purposes.

TRAVEL IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

Many of our destinations are in the developing world where attitudes, infrastructure, priorities, lifestyles and
cultures are very different from our own. This is often the very reason to visit the destination but certain aspects
may be frustrating. We always advise that the first thing you should pack is your sense of humour. This can prove
invaluable when travelling over rougher roads, waiting for a delayed aircraft and communicating with hotel staff
whose first language is not English.

T HE A SSOCIATION O F I NDEPENDENT T OUR O PERATORS
AITO is the association for independent and specialist holiday companies. Our member companies, usually
owner-managed, strive to create overseas holidays with high levels of professionalism and a shared concern for

admitted to membership. All members are required to adhere to a Code of Business Practice which encourages
high operational standards and conduct.

FINANCIAL SECURITY
An AITO member is required to protect money paid by customers to the member for any holiday sold under the
AITO logo. This protection applies to customers who are in the UK at the time of booking or to overseas
customers who have booked directly with the member. Members have to comply with UK Government Regulations
in this respect. Members submit details of their bonding and guarantee arrangements to the Association on a
regular basis

economic and environmental responsibilities of tour operating. Those demonstrating their achievements beyond
the pure acceptance of this principle are recognised by the award of 2 or 5 star status.

CUSTOMER RELATIONS
All members endeavour to deal swiftly and fairly with any issues their customers may raise. In the unlikely event
that a dispute between an AITO member and a customer cannot be settled amicably, AITO’s low-cost
Independent Dispute Settlement Service may be called upon by either side to bring the matter to a speedy and
acceptable conclusion.
