CAPE UNIT 2: TITRATION WORKSHEET

‘REGULAR TITRATIONS’

1. A student found that 23.8 cm 3 of H2SO4 were required to completely react with 25cm 3 of 0.2 moldm-3
KOH

(a) Draw boxes to show the information provided about each chemical

(b) Write a balanced equation to show the reaction which is taking place

(c) “Translate” the equation you have written

(d) Calculate the number of moles of KOH used

(e) Use your answers to (c) and (d) to determine the number of moles of sulphuric acid used

(f) Calculate the molar concentration of the sulphuric acid solution

DO NOT LOOK BACK AT THE QUESTION ABOVE. CAN YOU REMEMBER THE STEPS?

2. A student found that 14.2 cm 3 of HCl were required to completely react with 25cm 3 of 0.5 moldm-3
Ca(OH)2. Calculate the molar concentration of the HCl solution

‘BACK TITRATION’

3. A pack of ‘Chief’ baking powder was found to weigh 50 g. The active ingredient in baking powder is
NaHCO3. The entire pack was added to a beaker containing 100 cm 3 of 2 moldm-3 HCl. When all fizzing
stopped, this new mixture was then titrated against 0.8 moldm -3 NaOH, and the titre value of NaOH was
found to be 13.6 cm3.

(a) Draw boxes to show the information provided about each chemical

(b) Write a balanced equation to show the reaction which is taking place between HCl and NaOH

(c) “Translate” the equation you have written

(d) Calculate the number of moles of NaOH used **(Hint: Always start with the LAST chemical used in
the experiment)

(e) Use your answers to (c) and (d) to determine the number of moles of HCl used

(f) Look at the HCl box and calculate the total number of moles of HCl that were added to the baking
powder

(g) If there were _______ moles of HCl in total, and __________ moles of HCl reacted with NaOH, then
how many moles of HCl reacted with the baking powder?

(h) Write a balanced equation for the reaction between HCl and NaHCO3

(i) Translate this equation

(j) Use your answers to (g), (h) and (i) to determine the number of moles of NaHCO 3 present in the
baking powder

(k) Calculate the relative molecular mass of NaHCO3

(l) Calculate the mass of NaHCO3 in Chief baking powder

(m) Calculate the percentage of NaHCO3 in Chief baking powder

‘BACK TITRATION’

4. The active chemical in aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. It contains one carboxylic acid group and one ester
group, and thus, 1 mole of aspirin reacts with 2 moles of NaOH.

In an experiment, an aspirin tablet of mass 7 g is reacted with 25 cm 3 of 3 moldm-3 NaOH. This new
mixture was then titrated against HCl. It was found that 15.4 cm 3 of 0.6 moldm-3 HCl was required for
complete neutralization.

Given that the relative molecular mass of acetylsalicylic acid is 180, calculate the percentage of
acetylsalicylic acid in the aspirin tablet.
