BENEFITS AND DEFICITS

Deficits:
Perfume is a 43 million dollar industry that is often created with cheap,
unethically made synthetic chemicals that are highly reactive with
oxygen. When these chemicals react with oxygen in the air they act as
greenhouse gasses and damage the ozone layer.
Benefits:
Since perfume is mostly used for cosmetics it does not benefit the
environment, however, perfume can be made sustainably through natural
compounds and biodegradable packaging which also helps with
irritation. According to the National Health Institute 30.5% of the North
American population suffer from perfume allergies.

RELATION TO SDG
Due to perfume's damage to air quality and the atmosphere it is
hindering the completion of SDG 13, as it produces greenhouse
gases which is a direct contributor to climate change and the
collapse of ecosystems.

ALTERNATIVES

Citrus Fruits
Flower Essential Oils (Lavender, Rose, Peppermint etc)
Diffusers

FINAL STATEMENT

Although many people enjoy the scents of perfume it is truly a

harmful chemical that even the government has classified as
unsafe. In conclusion, perfume is made of molecules that form
harmful oxides which in turn reduces air quality and weaken
the ozone.
