MUSIC
Secular Music
• Non-religious music
• Means “being separated from religion”
• Words are so important part of secular music so
people can sing songs together for entertainment
and celebration.
• It was strongly influenced by Spaniards.
Harana
• A traditional Filipino serenade sung by a man to
show his love for a woman.
• Usually accompanied by a guitar and performed
outside the woman’s house.

• Talks to a cheerful commitment to love
• Usually accompanied by stringed instruments.

Rondalla
• Is an ensemble of string instrument
with a pick.
• The word rondalla came from the
Spanish word “ronda” which means
“serenade”
• Sometimes it is played with percussion
instrument like drums and marimba.
Banduria
• 14-stringed pear-shaped lute
with a round sound hole.
• Plays main melody in
rondalla
Laud
• 14-stringed pear-shaped lute
with a f-shaped sound hole.
• Bigger than Banduria
• Plays the alto part or counter
melody
Octavina
• 14-stringed lute, shaped like
a small guitar
• Plays counter melody or
harmony fill-in
Guitar
• A six stringed instrument
played by strumming or
plucking the strings.
Double Bass or Bajo
de Uñas
• Bass guitar which looks like a
big guitar
Brass Brand
• It is a musical ensemble that consists
of brass wind instruments, most often
with a percussion section.
• The brass brand in the Philippines
consists of groups of brass and
woodwind instrumentalists.

• Struck by a hand or
stick to produce
sounds.
