General Details

Specifically:
Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

■ We will predominantly study statics and dynamics:

❑ Involve study of methods for quantifying effect of forces
between objects such that mechanical equilibrium is
maintained.
❑ No real world problem is truly static: but many problems can be
modelled as static problems in time/length scales of interest.
■ Study of interactions and forces: man-made and natural
structures
■ The concepts and methods: firm grounding for your future
courses on solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, kinetics and
dynamics of machines.
■ This training: prepare you for solving open-ended questions in
your profession (design or research).

INTRODUCTION
Mechanics is a branch of the physical sciences that is concerned with the state of rest or motion of
bodies that are subjected to the action of forces.
Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

Assumptions

Rigid Body- A rigid body can be

considered as a combination of a large
number of particles in which all the
particles remain at a fixed distance
from one another, both before and
after applying a load. In most cases the 1. Ideal fluid
actual deformations occurring in 2. Viscous fluid
structures, machines, mechanisms, 3. Incompressible fluid
and the like are relatively small, and
the rigid-body assumption is suitable
for analysis.

INTRODUCTION

Concentrated Force- A concentrated force

Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

represents the effect of a loading which is assumed

to act at a point on a body. We can represent a
load by a concentrated force, provided the area
over which the load is applied is very small
compared to the overall size of the body. An
example would be the contact force between a
wheel and the ground.

INTRODUCTION
Particle- Bodies can be approximated as particles
to simplify analysis. Bodies are often assumed to be

particles if the rotational motions are negligible

when compared to the translational motions, or
in systems where there is no moment exerted on the
body, such as a concurrent force system.

EQUILIBRIUM OF A PARTICLE
Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

When the resultant of all the

forces acting on a particle is zero, the particle is in equilibrium.

If the resultant force acting on a particle is zero, the

determined by adding algebraically the
separate x and y components of each cable
force. This resultant FR produces the same
pulling effect on the bracket as all four cables

Free-body diagram
Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

The purpose of the diagram is to "free" the body from all other objects and surfaces around it so that it
can be studied in isolation. We will also draw in any forces or moments acting on the body, including
those forces and moments exerted by the surrounding bodies and surfaces that we removed.
