REVISED ARMY/NATIONALITY/NATIVE LANGUAGE LIST

The following tables contain revised and expanded lists of possible native languages for characters.
All languages are rolled for with percentile dice.
In almost all cases, possession of a second native language indicates ethnic/cultural identity (i.e. if
you're American character speaks Cantonese, he is probably a Chinese immigrant or the descendant of
the same). There can be exceptions to this generalization (in the previous example, perhaps the
character is the child of missionaries, for instance, who spent much of his childhood in Taiwan or
China). In either case, this should be explained or clarified during character generation.
Note that non-Russian Soviet soldiers receive varying degrees of skill in Russian as part of their
military service and background. I think this rule was omitted from ver. 2.x, but it will be familiar to
First Edition players.
For games set in Korea/East Asia I feel the same rule for non-Russian Soviets should be applied
to KATUSAs ("Koreans Attached to US Army").

NEW LANGUAGES
AINU: Spoken by the aboriginal inhabitants of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, Ainu is
spoken by a very small minority in modern day Hokkaido (perhaps as many as 25,000 speakers). Its
relation to other languages is not entirely clear.
FRISIAN: Spoken by Frieslanders (or the Fries), a fairly large ethnic minority in the north -eastern
Netherlands and coastal regions of western Germany. In the Netherlands, Frieslanders are a recognized
ethnic minority, with Frisian language schools and other legal protection. Frisian is a Western
Germanic language, though in reality it is also closely related to English (it is the closest surviving
relative of English).
SAAMI: Spoken by Lapplanders in northern Scandinavia.
