Operation instructions RADICATOR 2
Caution: please read through the operating instructions carefully and in full before you attempt
to run the model for the first time. This will help you avoid mistakes when handling your RC
track racing car
Itis in your own interests to study the safety notes. Once you have gained some experience
with your model car and are familiar with its handling, it is a good idea to read through the notes
again as they will then have greater relevance.
We at GRAUPNER are constantly working on the development of all our model cars, motors
and radio control systems; for this reason we are obliged to reserve the right to introduce
modifications to the kit contents in terms of technology, design and fittings. Please understand
that we cannot entertain claims against us if you find that parts differ from the stated
specificalivns and iliusuations.
If you should nnd any part in the kit which is faulty in terms of material or manufacturer, send it
hack to us in its original state and we will supply a replacement
Safety notes
If you are a beginner to radio-controlled model cars we strongly recommend that you beg the
assistance and advice of an experienced model car operator for your first attempts at driving the
model,
Your first step should be gentle practice on a broad, open site in order to minimise the risk of
collisions. If you ignore this advice you can easily damage property or even cause serious injury
to people,
RC models are not toys. Young people under 14 years should only be allowed to operate this
model under the supervision of a competent adult.
Only run your model where it will not disturb or endanger other people, and certainly not on
public streets, close to railway tracks or in the vicinity of hightension overhead cabies.
Many people hope that their personal public liability insurance policy will cover them for model
car operation, but not all insurance companies take the same view We strongly recommend
that you ask your insurer whether you are covered, and take out a separate policy if necessary.
We also recommend that you join a model car racing club and become a member of the national
governing body for model car sport. Ask at your model shop for details of your local club.
In most cases club membership includes third-party insurance which covers you for damage and
injury caused by your mode! carRadio control equipment

You will need a powerful servo for the steering function; it should be rated at a minimum of 4
kg/om torque, e.g. C 4421 high-performance super-servo, Order No. 3692
The batteries in your radio control system tend to self-discharge (lose capacity) when stored.
For this reason it is absolutely essential to charge the transmitter and receiver batteries
correctly before you operate the modal. At low temperatures hattery capacity falls off markedly,
‘so running times will be shorter in cold conditions, All NC batteries should be checked and their
capacity measured at regular intervals.
If you notice the servos running noticeably more slowly, or if the transmitter meter needle falls
back into the red area (or the transmitter's computer low-battery alarm trips), then you should
stop running the model and recharge the batteries. Details of charging procedures are included
in the operating instructions supplicd with your batlery charger.
When the batteries are fully charged you should check that the radio control system is operating
correctly. Do this every time you intend running the model, ar.d carry out a range check now
and then. This is the procedure switch on the transmitter and receiver but leave the transmitter
aerial collapsed Walk about 25 to 30 m away from the model and check that all the servos
respond to your stick movements in the correct direction and to the appropriate extent. Repeat
the check with the motor running, with an assistant hoiding the modei car.
Always switch on the transmitter first, then the receiver, otherwise the servos connected to the
receiving system will often carry out uncontrolled movements. At the end of a run reverse the
sequence: switch off the receiver first, then the transmitter.
If you do not keep to this order, i.e. the receiver is ON when the transmitter is OFF, then the
receiver may respond to other transmitters. interference signals and so on The servos may run
forcibly to their end-stops (motor stalled), and will then discharge the receiver battery very
quickly because the stail current is so high. Always extend the transmitter aerial fully before you
operate your model car.
Itis important to avoid channel clashes - i.e. two transmitters operating on the same channel.
Check constantly with your modelling colleagues to avoid this problem.Preparing the RC system
Before you run your model check the following aspects of your radia contral system:
1. Is the transmitter battery fully charged / are there new dry cells in the transmitter?
2. Is the receiver battery fully charged / are there new dry cells in the receiver battery hoider? If
the battery is flat or not correctly charged, the car will not respond correctly to the controls.
3. Does the steering servo work properly, and move in the correct “sense”? 4. Does the throttle
servo work properly, and move in the correct “sense"?
The first step is to establish the neutral (centre) position of the steering and throttle servos.
Connect the steering servo to receiver channel 1, the throttle servo to channel 11 and the
receiver battery to the "Batt" socket. The switch should be at the OFF setting, and the
transmitter battery switch in the ON position. Set the steering and throttle trims on the
transmitter to centre.
NiCd batteries
NiCd batteries can be recharged (up to about 1000 times), whereas normal dry cells cannot.
NiCu packs uiffer int number uf cells, well capacity arid weigh, Fur your ude Gal you reed a
7.2V NiCd drive battery,
It is important to keap to the charging recommendations provided by the battery manufacturer,
such as charge currents and charge times. If you wish to fastcharge your batteries check that
the manufacturer expressly describes them as suitable for high charge currents. The charge
current which actually nOws may vary somewhat from the nominal value because of a wide
input voltage range, differences between cell types and battery size (capacity). This must be
taken into account when you are calculating the charge time
Please bear in mind that new batteries do not reach full capacity until they have undergone
several charge / discharge cycles, and you may also find that an automatic charger terminates
the charge process prematurely when connected to a new pack. We recommend that you give
your batteries severai charge / discharge cycles to ensure that the automatic charge termination
circuit works correctly, and that your batteries are accepting a full capacity charge.

Safety notes
* The charger should only be used with the original power cables and charge leads. The
charge outputs and connecting leads must not be modified, interconnected in any way or
short-circuited, and should always be uncoiled when charging is in progress.
‘* Check the charger regularly for damage to cables, connectors, case etc. If you find that any
part is damaged, do not use the charger* The charger and the battery to be charged must be placed on a non-flammable,
heat-resistant surface for charging Keep inflammabie and volatile materials well away from
the charging area.
* To avoid any possibility of short-circuits always connect the charge lead plug to the charger
first, then connect the NC battery to the charge lead
* Check before charging: are all connections in good order, or are there intermittent contacts?
Please bear in mind that fast-charging NC batteries can be dangerous; you should never
leave the charger running unsupervised.
* Battery chargers develop considerable heat when in use. The slots in the case are designed
to promote a flow of cooling air through the unit, and they must not be covered or sealed
Provide good ventilation so that the unit does not get too hot, and leave plenty of time for the
charger to cool off aner a fast-charge. Protect the unit from direct sunshine, dust, damp and
rain
‘* The battery charger is designed for connection to a 12V car battery or the 230V/50 Hz AC
mains supply. Before you connect the charger to the car battery, and for as long as it remains
connected, the vehicle's engine must be stopped. It the charger Is connected to a car battery
then that battery must not be connected to a car battery charger at the same time. The
charger must never be connected to the car battery and mains socket at the same time.
* Battorios must always be removed from the equipment before charging.
‘* The following types of battery must not be connected to the charger:
- packs consisting of different types of cell
- mixtures of old and new cells, or cells of different make:
-non-rechargeable basteries (dry cells);
- batteries which are not expressly stated to be suitable for charging at the currents which this
charger stipplies;
- faulty or damaged basteries or cells;
- packs which are already fully charged, hot, or not fully discharged;
- batteries with integral charging or charge termination circuits;
~ batteries which are permanently installed in an item of equipment, or are electrically connected
to other components.

We recommend the use of a radio control system with integral BEC system.
The BEC system eliminates the need for a separate receiver battery, as the power supply for
the receiving system is derived ffom the main drive battery. The
elimination of the receiver battery makes the model lighter and thereby improves its
pertormance.
The receiver and servos require an operating voltage of 4.8 - 6 Volts, If a 7.2 V drive battery is
used in the model, the voltage has to be reduced electronically
to 4.8 -6 Volts, and this is done by the BEC system. If your radio control system does not
feature a BEC system you will need to use the BEC switch harness,

Safety notes
* The speed controller is supplied with a polarised double plug fitted. If you wish to use drive
batteries fitted with different connectors you will need to replace the double plug. In this case
it is essential to maintain correct polarity, as reversed polarity will immediately ruin the speed
controller.
* Avoid switching directly from high-speed forwards running to reverse, as this can overload
the system and cause damage.* Don't open the throttle if the car is stopped by an obstacle, as this would again cause an
overload situation which could cause damage to the electronic
* The speed controller is designed to provide power to the receiver and up to 2 additional
servos from the drive battery. Don't place a higher load on it, as this will damage the control
electronics
* Ifyou expect to run the car in rainy conditions and/or on a wet surface, pack the receiver,
servo and speed controller in watertight protective coverings.
‘* Check that all plug-in connections make perfect contact. The contacts must be corrosion-free.
‘* When installing the speed controller be sure to provide good air circulation so that it is cooled
effectively.
At the end of each running session disconnect the drive battery fram the speed controller,
otherwise there is a chance that the motor might burst into life accidentally, with resultant
damage to the speed controller and drive battery,

Installing the steering and throttle servos
Unscrew the trackrods from the two steering arms right and left
Unscrew the front steering servo mounting plate from the chassis.
Fix the steering servo to the steering servo mounting plate using four cross-point screws. The
setvo oulpul should face the narrow side of the plate
Switch on the transmitter and check that the servo works correctly as follows: set both stick trims
to centra, then connect the steering servo ta the "Channel 1" sacket on the recaiver, and the
switch harness plug to the "Battery" socket. Charge up the drive battery fully and connect it to
the battery plug. Switch the receiver system on by operating the "ON/OFF" switch; the steering
servo should now move to centre.
Press the servo-saver onto the steering servo output device with the trackrods at the front,
facing the narrow side of the mounting plate. Fix the servo-saver to the servo using the screw
‘supplied
Screw the steering servo mounting plate to the chassis with the servo-saver facing forward and
down
Align the front axle carefully and set it to the ~straight ahead" position, Screw the two trackrods
to the steering arms.
Pack up the car so that all the wheei axles are unobstructed and free to rotate. Move the
steering stick on the transmriter to both sides to check the steenng
travel of the front axle. When you have done that set the front wheels to neutral (centre) by
screwing the trackrods in or out, and adjust the length of the trackrods until the front wheels areexactly parallel and pointing straight ahead. If this adjustment is not carried out carefully the
model car will not run straight, and may have a different turning radius to left and right.
Screw the speed controller to the servo brackets using four screws, with the speed controller
‘output device facing the rear axle,
Connect the speed controller servo to the "Channel 2” socket on the receiver. Connect a fully
charged drive battery to the battery plug. At this point only one motor cable should be
connected, Set all the sticks and trims on the transmitter to centre then switch it on; the servos
will now run to their centre position. Place the servo arm on the speed controller servo. Check
that the servo is exactly central in the fore-and-aft direction. Move the speed controller to the
centre position (motor stopped) by hand and press the ball-link on the speed controller pushrod
onto the ball-end bolt fitted to the steering arm.
Pack up the model car again so that all the wheels are clear of the ground. Connect the second
power Cable anid Check thal all the model Gal's furiclivis work CuneKly,
When you move the throttle stick to full-throttle and reverse in turn, the speed controller should
move reliably to the final stage in each direction. If this is not the case check the adjustment
range of the controller arm and make adjustments to the speed controller pushrod. The wiper
contacts of the controller arm must also make good contact with the controller board, Ail the
rotating parts should turn freely. Once you are satisfied that everything is working properly
switch off the RC system and disconnect the drive battery.
Itis important that the electric motor is adequately suppressed
We recommend fitting a suppressor hiter, 0.g. Order No. 2361, The filter is factory assembled
and is simply soldered between the electric motor and the connecting leads.
Shock absorbers
The four long oil-filled shock absorbers supplied with your GRAUPNER on-road car have a very
significant influence on its handling on the road. Whenever you dismantle and reassemble the
shock absorbers - do it carefully! Always assemble the units in pairs (front and rear). This is the
reason: if one of the front shock absorbers is set slightly softer or harder than the other, your car
will land at an angle after a jump, and will handle differently when turning to left or right
The same applies to the rear shocks.
The damping effect shouild always be slightly softer at the front than at the rear
The running height of the model is very important, It should be set so that the front and rear
suspension arms return to a position parallel to the ground when you raise the model 20 to 25
cm and let it fall. This ensures adequate suspension travel in both directions (up and down). If
your model does not return to the correct running height, adjust the spring sleeves.
Selecting the correct grade of shock absorber oil is also significant. It is normally advisable to
start with a lighter oil and then experiment with a heavier grade. If the chassis jumps excessively
on a rough surface, you should use a heavier oil. If the tyres lift from the track surface under the
same conditions, the oil is too thick. In this case you should try a lighter oil so that thesuspension responds more quickly. The aim is to ensure that the tyres stay in contact with the
track surface for as long as possible
The hardness of the damping can also influence the steering characteristics of your model car
Itis adjusted by setting the front and rear suspension to a correspondingly soft or hard setting,
The stiffness of the damping is influenced by the characteristics of the springs, oil viscosity, the
angle ot the shock absorbers, and the combination of these three tactors. A sott rear end yields
better ground adhesion (traction), but at the expense of steering response. The handling of your
car will tend to be more predictable because it will understeer through turns, i. it will drift
towards the outside of the turn. In contrast, if the rear suspension is too hard the steering effect
will be stronger but the car will tend to "wag its tail" and skid unless the driver is very skilful
If the front suspension is adjusted to a softer setting the steering effect will be amplified and vice
versa: a harder setting reduces steering response,
When the suspension damping is set correctly - the chassis not tending to jump, and the wheels.
not tending to hop about - you will find that there is a narrow range of adjustment available over
witch the Herdiiess Of Ue furl atid rear suspension Gan be fine-lunied, This is a Vichy
adjustment which can only be carried out by making very finely graduated changes in the
viscosity of the shock absorber oil
Weight distribution
Always bear in mind when adjusting the shock absorbers that correct weight distribution is of the
utmost importance if your GRAUPNER on-road car is to exhibit the faultless handling of which it
is capable. Any given tyre will provide maximum traction if the weight of the vehicle is acting
upon it, When you reduce speed and enter a turn, the car's weight shifts increasingly onto the
two front wheels and tyres, thus giving maximum steering effect. The opposite is also true’
during acceleration the car's wight is shifted onto the rear tyres, which then give maximum
traction
The softer the suspension, the greater the weight shift. From this viewpoint it makes sense to
set up the suspension as soft as possible, to give the fastest response, but not so sofl that the
shock absorption system has no effect. Between these two extremes there is a "golden mean",
and the only way of establishing this setting is to do plenty of practice at your own racing track.
Adjusting the wheels
The first step: satisfy yourself that the steering trim on the transmitter is at neutral (centre). Now
adjust the servo-saver and the trackrods until the wheels are exactly "straight ahead" This
ensures that steering travels (turning radii) are the same on each side.
Front wheel toe-in of no more than 1 - 3° is sufficient to prevent the car "wandering" on the
track,
When you are just getting to know your model car's handling we recommend that you set up all
four wheels in such a way that they stand vertical to the ground at normal running height. It is a
good idea to hold a setsquare or engineer's square against each wheel in turn so that you can
be sure that the wheels are set up exactly, When you press down on the suspension you will
notice that the wheels exhibit a slight amount of negative camber. The reason for this is that it is
desirable to reduce the positive camber of the outside wheels when the car is entering a turn, as
this increases the contact area and thus the traction of the outside tyres, and therefore raisesthe speed at which the car can negotiate turns. However, the change in negative camber also
causes a reduction in contact area of the rear tyres when the suspension is compressed by the
force of acceleration
If your track has more straights than turns you may find that it is not necessary to reduce
(positive) wheel camber when the car is turning. In this case we recommend that the rear
wheels are lett vertical to the ground over the entire range ot suspension travel
Note that a slight increase in negative camber on the front suspension will improve your on-road
car's steering characteristics when the suspension is under load, when the model is used
off-road. But remember that too great a change in negative camber produces a marked
reduction in the contact area of the tyres.
The way to better driving
Improving your driving skills is an essential aspect of RC racing, but its importance is often
under-estimated. The slightest change to the settings of your model car have an effect on its
handling on the track, but you will not be able to detect and understand these nuances unless
you drive smouthily aid evenly. The followin is a series Uf lips which will help you lo revurd,
faster times lap by lap.
41. Avoid collisions and "knots" of cars
It is often the case that the winner of a race is not the fastest car, but the one which gets tangled
up in the fewest accidents. Always drive carefully at points where you notice cars colliding
regularly.
Keep a safe distance behind cars which are slower than you or are being driven by
inexperienced operators. Driving too close to his rear bumper may well cause such a driver to
panic, cause an accident and get you involved in it. You will lose less time if you wait for a slow
car to negotiate a difficult turn than by trying to overtake, getting tangled in an accident and
having to wait until the track marshal puts your car back into action - assuming he is not dozing
Apart from the fact that such accidents cost you time, they may cause damage to your car which
could eliminate you from the race altogether. Bear in mind that a collision with a wall when your
car is at its maximum speed of 40 - 48 km/hr is approximately equivalent to dropping your car
nose-first from the roof of a house! RC buggies could be made so strong that they were
absolutely indestructible, but they would then be far too heavy to be competitive. The best
solution is quite simple: "drive carefully!”
2. The right technique through turns
The corract way to negotiate a tum is to approach on the outside of the truck, run to the inside
at the mid-point of the turn, and finally exit the tum on the outside ot tne track again
If there is heavy traffic on the track you will not always be able to keep to the optimum line
through turns. In this case it is better to reduce speed and keep as close as possible to the
inside of the turn, Cars crammed together in dense traffic usually get pushed towards the
outside of the turn, and if this happens you might find a way through. Track conditions may also
force you to adopt a different line through turns. Often it is better to steer around pot-holes and
bumps instead of running straight over them in an effort to maintain the optimum line.
Reduce the throttle setting when entering a turn, and open up again as the car comes out of the
tum, It is best to close the throttle gradually at the start of the tum, as this shifts the vehicle's
weight smoothly onto the front wheels and thereby improves the car's steering characteristics(see also the section on ~Shock absorbers"). Don't accelerate too strongly as your car leaves
the turn because it will then tend to skid outwards and, if it understeers, run into the outside
wall. Gentle, gradual throttle control and smooth steering is the key to getting through turns
quickly. "Cavalier" starts and violent braking increase rates of wear in your model, increase the
risk of accidents and result in lower average speeds. It is important that the car keeps on
2-rolling! It you aim at driving smoothly at all times your lap times will improve quite naturally
3, The "view forward”
Don't gaze fixedly at your car!.It is far better to look slightly in front of it, and especially when it
is entering a turn. Look where you want the car to go and steer it there using your peripheral
vision
4. Avoid “flying”
Your model car is faster on the ground than in the air, so keep it on the ground! If the car does
jump, you should be aware that the way you handle the throttle decides how it will land
aflenuaids. If you reduce Uollle the miunient the model reached the apex of ils jurnp, iL will teria
to land front wheels first. If you leave the throttle wide open while the car is in the air and close it
just before it lands, the model will tend to land with the nose slightly raised. The best method is
to close the throttle gradually in the air so that the car lands on an even keel
The correct combination of opening and closing the throttle may well vary from jump to jump,
and this is another area where you need to experiment and develop a keen eye. This only
comes only from experience
Important: don't qver let your model car land with the throttle wide open! The jerks and violent
shock loads which result can easily cause serious damage to the transmission and other parts
of the power train,
5, Don't panic!
If a faster car appears to be zooming past you, stay cool and let him go. If you try to battle it out
with him you could so easily make a serious mistake and wreck your car. It is fairly certain that
you will often be able to overhaul a faster car if you maintain a correct line and avoid collisions.
With luck you will be able to overtake him through the turns. In this way you may be able to
overtake the other vehicle several times in the course of a race
