INTERVIEW
The term interview is derived from French word
‘Entre voir’ that means to glimpse or to see each other.
*It is a procedure designed to obtain information from
individual through responses to oral questions.

Definition
“Interview is a conversation between two
people (the interviewer &the interviewee) where
questions are asked by interviewer to obtain
information from the interviewee.”

Objectives of interview
There are following two objectives of interview.

1 Determine that the candidate has the right
attitude, fulfills job requirements and best fit for
organization’s culture.
2 find the best candidate for the organization
among all other candidates.
Types of interview
Interview can be divided into four categories.
BASED ON STRUCTURE
This category can again divide into 3 types.
1 Structured interview
2 Unstructured interview
3 Semi-structured interview
1 Structured Interview
“ A type of interview that relies on a set of
standardized and predetermediated questions to
gather information.”

Example:
If you conduct five interviews & the first
question you ask each one is;
Do you believe the world is round, yes or No?
2 Unstructured Interview
“It is also called Non-directive. Interview in
which questions are not prearranged .No set format
is followed. Candidate himself is encouraged to
express himself about his interest, background,
competencies, etc. Interviewer judges the traits of
interviewee, fitness for the job, strength,
weakness,& potential etc.”
Example:
Tell me about yourself?
3 Semi-structured interview
“The interviewer asks only a few
predetermined questions while the rest of the
questions are not planned in advance.”

This category can be again divide into 3 types.
1 Stress Interview
2 Appraisal Interview
3 Exit Interview
1 Stress Interview
“An interview in which the applicant is made
uncomfortable by a series of often rude questions.
This technique helps to identify hypersensitive
applicants and those with low or high-stress
tolerance.”
2 Appraisal Interview
“A formal discussion between an employee
and his/her manager regarding performance &
other aspects of job rule. The employer and the
employee discuss the job performance of the
individual and the key areas of improvements.”

What aspects of your job do you believe you can
improve?
3 Exit Interview
“An interview is a conversation that happen
between a company & an employee who has
decided to leave the organization.”
The objective is to better understand why that
employee has decided to resign, in the hope that
the company can improve how it works and prevent
other employees from the same.

1 One-to-one Interview
“It is most commonly used interview format in
several industries. In which candidate meets usually
in a conference room, or an office.”
The interviewer evaluates the candidates job
application,cv,& cover letter and ask relevant
questions and candidate is encouraged to answer
without any interruptions and can help them
determine if the candidate is the right fit for the job.
2 Sequential Interview
“A series of interviews are conducted in
which the candidate interviewed sequentially by
several interviews.”
Each one rate the candidate on the standard
evaluation form & them these rating are compared
before the hiring decision is taken. Each interviewer

asks different questions from the candidate gives
his independent opinion.
3 Group Interview
“In which several candidates are
interviewed simultaneously for similar positions.”
Group interview allows you to see who shines the
brightest among them, compare applicants side-by-
side & get the answers to your questions from
multiple applicants. Constantly ,demonstrating how
well they perform individually in a group.
4 Panel Interview
“It refers to a type of interview which
includes one applicant and several interviewers,
often representatives of different departments
within a company. Each panel asks a set of question
that might be related to different fields.”

1 Situational Interview
“The interview focuses on individual’s ability to
project what his/her behavior will be in given
situation. Questions are predetermined and asked
from the interviewee to project what his/her
behavior will be.”
Example:
If your credit will be taken by other employee,
how will you react.
2 Job related Interview

“It is technical in nature & mostly questions are
asked related to the job specification, responses of
interviewee determines the conclusion about his
suitability for job.”
3 Psychological Interview
“This type of interview is conducted by
professional psychologist, questions are intended to
assess personality traits of interview.”
4 Telephonic Interview
“An interview used to screen or shortlist the
candidates for selection.”
