Scenario
The research Vessel ‘’RRS Sir David Attenborough’’ is operated for the British Antarctic
Survey for the purposes of both research and logistic support.
They are currently operating in the Labrador Sea with minimum safe manning. The
vessel has a compliment of Master, Chief Officer, Second Officer, four deck ratings,
Chief Engineer, second engineer, third engineer and motorman.
The ship is 125 metres long, beam 24m and draught 7m. The operational speed is 13
knots.
Sir David Attenborough has a twin-shaft hybrid diesel electric propulsion system, driving
two 5-bladed controllable pitch propellers.
This gives Sir David Attenborough a maximum speed of 17.5 knots in open water and
the ability to break up to 1-metre thick level ice at a speed of 3 knots.
For manoeuvring, the vessel has four 1,580 kW (2,120 hp) Tees White Gill thrusters with
Teignbridge Propellers 60 inch 4 blade rotors, two in the bow and two in the stern.

Scenario
Nuuk Port and Harbour
It is located in the southeastern area of the city of Nuuk known as Old Nuuk. The
harbour entrance is restricted due to tides during much of the year, and ice during
winter.
The inner port area is home to a marina for smaller vessels and ferries. And larger
vessels to the east side of the port area.
Container area is located east of the ferry terminal with an area for container storage
and processing.

Learning outcome 2
Whilst transiting inbound for Nuuk Port and Harbour in the Labrador sea, the RSS Sir
David Attenborough encounters unexpected gale force winds from a North easterly
direction, making it difficult to approach the berth.
TASK 1)
Evaluate how weather and tidal conditions impacts the manoeuvrability of a vessel when
in a narrow channel and manoeuvring alongside a berth. (20 marks)
TASK 2) As part of the Master Pilot exchange, the pilot advises the Master that there is
restricted berthing room on the ‘’Atlantkaj’’ berth.
The master evaluates how they will manoeuvre the vessel upon arrival.
To allow for traffic movement and berth availability the following manoeuvres will have to
be undertaken.
- Berthing alongside other vessels
- Warping along jetties
- Turning on an anchor

Learning outcome 3 - Gyro
TASK 3)
b) Using both diagrams and a detailed description, interpret how the inherent
properties of a gyroscopic system are harnessed to construct a Gravity-controlled
Compass
