The course on water, sanitation, and hygiene for the prevention and care of
neglected tropical diseases highlighted the critical role that WASH services play in
addressing NTDs. NTDs, which affect over 1.6 billion people worldwide, particularly
vulnerable communities, can lead to severe disabilities and even death. Access to safe
water, sanitation, and hygiene services is crucial in the prevention, management, and
care of these diseases.

One key insight from the course is the need to establish and strengthen
collaboration between WASH and NTD actors. Governments, development agencies,
civil society partners, and other stakeholders must work together to identify opportunities
for engagement and collaboration. By leveraging the tools and resources available, joint
activities can be initiated at both national and sub-national levels, fostering a
comprehensive approach to combating NTDs.

The course also emphasized the importance of understanding the links between
WASH and NTDs under the BEST framework: behavior, environment, social inclusion,
treatment, and care. A comprehensive approach to environmental sanitation is vital,
including measures to separate waste from humans and animals, reduce vector
breeding, and prevent water and soil contamination. In healthcare settings, infection
prevention and control, as well as vector control measures, are essential.

Additionally, the course highlighted the need for safe, reliable, affordable,
universally accessible, and sustainable water infrastructure. This infrastructure not only
helps prevent the consumption of contaminated water but also reduces contact with
surface water and enables personal hygiene practices. Integrated Vector Management
and incorporating Veterinary Public Health services into disease control efforts were also
identified as crucial components.

In conclusion, the course emphasized that addressing neglected tropical diseases

requires a multi-faceted approach that integrates water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
By recognizing the links between WASH and NTDs, promoting collaboration, and
implementing comprehensive strategies, we can make significant progress in preventing
and caring for neglected tropical diseases, ultimately improving the health and well-being
of communities worldwide.
