Purpose To educate people about the drugs itself
Information

1. The chemical name for ecstasy is 3,4-

methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA. The chemical
structure and the effects of MDMA are similar to
amphetamine (a stimulant) and to mescaline (a
hallucinogen). What’s sold as ecstasy often contains drugs
other than MDMA, which may or may not be similar in effect
to MDMA. Some of the other drugs include caffeine,
ephedrine, amphetamine, dextromethorphan, ketamine,
and LSD. Ecstasy sometimes contains highly toxic drugs, such
as paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA), which can be lethal
even in low doses. So basically, Ecstasy is a drug that affects
the brain’s chemistry by releasing a high level of serotonin,
which plays a role in regulating mood, energy level and
appetite.

2. According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and

Drug Addiction, the Merck chemical company originally
developed ecstasy in 1912. The drug gained some popularity
among psychiatrists in the 1970s and 1980s because some
believed it enabled patients to open up and also gain clear
insight into their issues

3. Anton Kollisch, a chemist at the pharmaceutical company

Merck, first discovered MDMA in Germany in 1912.
Researchers were not interested in the drug itself, but instead
used it to synthesize methylhydrastinine, a potential
treatment for uterine bleeding.

4. Soon after its introduction to psychotherapy, some people

began using MDMA for recreational purposes. Because it
produces a unique set of effects characteristic of
both stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs, the name
“ecstasy” was coined as a pithy description of the drug’s
effect on users.

5. MDMA is called a club drug because it often is used at all-

night dance parties (called raves) or at techno parties and
nightclubs. In addition, MDMA increasingly is being used
in private homes and on high school and college campuses.

7. Ecstasy use mainly involves swallowing tablets (50-150 mg), which
are sometimes crushed and snorted, occasionally smoked, but
rarely injected. Ecstasy users usually take ecstasy by “stacking”
(taking three or more tablets at once) or by “piggybacking” (taking
a series of tablets over a short period of time).
8. MDMA starts to work about 20 minutes after it is taken
and the effects usually last for 3 to 4 hours. It can make
people feel euphoric, energetic, confident and very
affectionate towards others. People who take a lot or who
have a strong batch of MDMA may feel like they are
floating or have hallucinations.

It can also cause unwanted side effects, such as:

 large pupils
 clenching jaw
 grinding teeth
 heightened senses
 sweating
 nausea or vomiting
 muscles aches and pains
 higher blood pressure and heartbeat
 reduced appetite
 anxiety
 paranoia
 irrational behaviour

Coming down after taking MDMA leaves users feeling

depressed, irritable, anxious and paranoid. They can have
trouble sleeping and concentrating.
