Halem:-

Halam is the mother tongue of Halam tribe and Rankhal, is their dialect which is considered to be an
offshoot of the Halam dialect. Most of the Halam can follow Tripuri language. The scarcity of
documents depicting the origin of Halam people makes it difficult to trace out its history of
existence. In the Halam language, the people call themselves as the “Shinlung” or “Chinlung” which
means their ancestors travelled from the China regions.

Chakma language
This is an Indo-European language spoken by the Chackma and Diangnet people. Its better relatives
are Bengalis, Assamese, Bishnupriya Manipuri and Sylhetis. . Literacy in Chakma script is low. The
influence of Bengali over the Chakma language is quite predominant.

Kokborok:-
Kokborok is a Sino-Tibetan language of the Bodo–Garo branch. It is closely related to the Bodo and
Dimasa languages of Assam and the Garo language, which is spoken in the state of Meghalaya. The
root of Kokborok can be traced to the Sini-Tibetan origins. Kokborok doesn’t have a script. It is
written using the Bengali script. It’s also the most spoken tribal language.

Santal language

Santal tribes belong to the Austro-Asiatic racial stock and migrated to Tripura from West
Bengal and Bihar mostly. The regional language that they use is known as Santal or Santali.
This language was written in Roman script during British rule, however later it is written in
Devanagari script.

Sadri Language
This language is also known as “Nagpuri” spoken mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. It has
originated from Bengali, Hindi and Oriya language combinations. It was the first language spoken by
the Chero tribe.

Bengali:-
The influence of Bengali language was always predominant in Tripura since Bengalis form a major
part of the population. It is the most important and dominant languages of the state.
A large number of Tripuras (Tripuris) who know Bengali much better than Tripuri have recorded the
former languages as their mother tongue. It’s also the most spoken language in urban centres

Other minor languages which are spoken in Tripura are Chakma, Chin, Darlong, Hmar, Hrangkhol,
Kharia, Khasi, Koch, Kurumukar, Kurux, Marma, Mizo, Mundari, Tangkhul, Ralte, Ranglong, Riang,
Sakachep, Santhali, Sylheti and Vaiphei.
