What’s In

This Reminds Me…

Most people believe th
at a picture paints a th
ousand words. Study t
he
given picture below. In
what way does the pict
ure relate to communic
ation?
Very Good! You learned in Grade 11 that Communication is simply
the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.
However, communication is more than just transferring or imparting
messages, it also means that these messages must successfully be
transmitted to the receiver. Thus, the term requires three parts: sender, the
message, and the recipient.

To expound, for communication to take place, the sender ‘encodes’ the

messages, usually in a mixture of words and non-verbal communication. It is
transmitted in some way (for example, in speech or writing), and the recipient
‘decodes’ it.

In the above definition, it is noteworthy to remember that messages like

information, ideas or emotions were sent by the sender through a
communication channel to a receiver, or to multiple receivers.

What is this communication channel? How does it relate to media? Let’s

continue.

What’s New

Activity One. Mirror, Mirror of Me!

Do you see yourself like the picture below? Give your response by completing
the following sentences. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Indeed! It is not surprising to see yourself surrounded by social media

platforms like twitter, emails, Facebook and others. Why it is so?

7
What is It

Traditionally, people
communicate using
face to face intera
ction.
Nowadays, people
communicate and c

ther through
internet. Internet or t
he web has become
the means of interac

people together – fri
ends, family, young
people, or complete
strangers that
share interests or ob
jectives – and this ca
n foster a sense of b
elonging and
identity. Internet is th
e medium. So, what i
s meant by medium?

The term media, w

It describes the var
