I. TOPIC
a. Solve problems involving the addition or subtraction of numbers within 20.
b. Standard - CC.2.2.1.A.1
II. OBJECTIVES
a. Following teacher demonstration, the students will be able to add and subtract numbers
within 20 and be able to get 6/10 questions correct on the summative assessment at the
end of class.
III. TEACHING PROCEDURES
a. Anticipatory Set
i. Welcome students to class.
ii. Have simple (1-5) addition and subtraction worksheets for the students to
complete as morning work to refresh their memory.
iii. Go over when completed.
iv. Invite students to come up front to the carpet and grab whiteboards and
markers.
b. Development 1
i. Write 7+4=? on the board
ii. Break problem into 3 small addends (3+4+4=)
iii. Ask students how they would solve or if they know the answer.
iv. Use a number line example if necessary.
v. Send students back to their desks while you write new problems on the board.
c. Guided Practice 1
i. Write 5 problems on the board for the students to complete on their own.
ii. Walk around the classroom to see how students are doing and make sure to
help them if they are struggling.
iii. Go over all 5 problems together as a class. Invite students up to the board to
write the answers themselves.
d. Closure
i. Give students access to the google form assessment.

a. Morning work worksheet
b. Whiteboard
c. Small whiteboards for students
d. Dry erase markers
e. Google form summative assessment
V. ADAPTIONS
a. Frequent check-ins with the student
b. Adjust the google form if they require it (ie. Make font bigger, put on paper instead of
online, etc.)
c. Write clearly on the board/have the student in the front of the classroom.
VI. EVALUATION
a. Did students grasp the concept quickly? Did we go too fast? Should there have been
more background discussion when introducing the bigger numbers? Did the number line
example help them? Did we need to use another tool?
