The pie charts illustrate the populations of Yemen and Italy based on three age groups
in 2000 and 2050.
Overall, the highest proportion of people in Yemen were aged under 14 while most
Italians fell into 15-59 age group in 2000. It is predicted that in 2050, populations of
both nations will show an increase in the percentage of elderly people.
In 2000, over 60% of citizens in Italy fell into 15-59 age bracket, compared to that of
Yemen, at roughly 45%. Similarly, the elderly Italians made up approximately one-fourth
of their population, yet the figure for Yemen was trivial (3.6%). In contrast, a half of
Yemen’s population were children, while the data of Italy was significantly lower, with
just under 15%.
In the year 2050, the proportion of 15-to 59-year-olds in Yemen will be on the rise, to
about 57%, while that of Italy will drop dramatically by roughly 15%. In addition, it is
predicted that the figures for people who will be aged over 60 in Yemen and Italy will
both climb by 2.1% and 18.2% respectively. However, the forecast shows that there will
be a decrease in the percentages of children in these countries, to 37% and 11.5%.

The graph shows consumption of energy in the U.S. since 1980 with projections through
2030.
The historical trends show Petrol and Oil as the major sources of fuel, rising from 35
quadrillion (35q) units used in 1980 to 42q in 2012. Despite some fluctuation between
1980 and 1995, there was a steady increase, which is expected to continue, reaching
47q in 2030.
Consumption of energy from natural gas and coal followed a similar pattern over the
period. From 20q and 15q respectively in 1980, gas showed an initial fall and coal a
gradual increase, with the two fuels equal between 1985 and 1990. Consumption has
fluctuated since 1990 but both now provide 24q. Coal consumption is projected to rise
to 31q in 2030, whereas after 2014, natural gas is forecast to remain stable at 25q.
In 1980, energy from solar/wind, nuclear, and hydropower was the least-used, with only
4q. Nuclear has risen by 3q, and solar/wind by 2. Since 2005, hydropower has fallen
back to the 1980 figure. It is expected to remain approximately constant through 2030,
while the others are projected to rise gradually after 2025.
Overall, the US will continue to rely on fossil fuels, with sustainable and nuclear energy
sources remaining relatively insignificant.

This model has been prepared by an examiner as an example of a very good answer.
However, please note that this is just one example out of many possible approaches.
Salmon begin life as eggs on a pebbly riverbed, hidden among reeds in the slow-moving
upper reaches of a river. After five to six months, the eggs hatch into 'fry'. For
approximately the next four years, these baby salmon will live in a lower, faster-flowing
waters of the river. During this time they measure between three and eight centimeters
in length.
By the time salmon reach twelve to fifteen centimeters, they are termed 'smolt', and at
this time they migrate further downriver into the open sea. After five years at sea the
salmon will have grown to adult size, which is between seventy and seventy-six
centimeters. They then begin swimming back to their birthplace, where they will lay
their legs, and the cycle starts anew.
In summary, the salmon passes through three distinct physical stages as it grows to
maturity. Each of these stages takes place in a very different aquatic location. It is
noteworthy that the first 2 stages of this fish's life occur in a freshwater environment,
while the third stage is lived in saltwater.

This IELTS task 1 map would receive a high score. The map has a clear overall
progression and organisation as it is introduced, the main features are identified, then
it clearly compares the first map with the second. There is a mix of vocabulary, with
the right language of location used to say where things were positioned and the
language of comparison and contrast used to good effect to show how things differed
or remained the same. There is a good range of accurate complex sentences and
structures to ensure a higher score for grammatical range and accuracy.
The map shows how a village called Ryemouth has developed over the last twenty-five
years. There have been several changes, the most noticeable being the increases in
accommodation, the elimination of the fishing industry, and the introduction of sports
facilities.
In 1995, to the south of the village where the sea is there was previously a fishing
industry, with a fishing port and quite a large fish market as well. Next to this was a
small cafe. On the other side of the road running by the sea stood a line of five shops
and a hotel, while situated in the north east part of the village was farmland and a park
with trees. The main housing of the village was located in the north west around a main
road that runs from the coastal road, with twelve houses, four of them encircled by a
smaller side-street.
Turning to the present day map, it can be seen that the fishing facilities have all gone,
being replaced by four apartments, and the shops have become restaurants. The cafe
remains, as does the hotel, albeit with parking facilities which it did not have before.
Having been converted into a golf course, the farmland has now gone, while the forest
park has been removed to make way for tennis courts. Although the old houses remain,
new ones have been built, along with a new road with two new houses beside it.

Model Answer
People have different views on the subjects that university students should be allowed
to study. While some people think that students should only be able to study subjects
that these people think will be valuable in the future like science and technology, I
believe that students should be able to choose their area of study.
For many people, restricting university students to subjects like science and technology
is an easy argument to make. The main reason is that these kinds of subjects contribute
visibly to society. For example, improvements in medicine rely on advances in medical
research, engineering, and computer science and technology. Only allowing students to
study these kinds of subjects will mean that there will be more people available for work
in these areas.
While the benefits of more graduates in these kinds of useful subjects are clear, I believe
that it would be a mistake to only allow students to study these subjects. This is because
society is not able to accurately predict the future and what kinds of skills that people
will need for jobs. For example, there may be entirely new fields created that need a
strong artistic ability and solid writing skills. If students are only trained to be good
scientists or engineers, they may not be able to succeed in these new fields. On the
other hand, if we allow students to choose their major, society will be able to better
adapt to the future.
In conclusion, while it may seem reasonable to force students to study subjects that are
currently viewed as useful, I believe that allowing students to choose what they study
will help society be better prepared for whatever changes the future will bring.

Model Answer
This answer would probably achieve 6.5. Its strengths are its organization and the fact
that the writer has addressed the task well and his position is generally clear.
However, the errors in grammar and vocabulary mean that it cannot be higher than
6.5.
In recent years, the household waste are considerably increasing. In addition, nobody
try to fix the problem and call the government to solve it. Many people think that the
authority should make some laws to maintain the recycling process. I will discuss about
legal requirement as a way to increase recycling and the other ways.
Firstly, should it be compulsory for people to recycle their waste? The environmental
issue is one of the main problem of our world and we don’t help it. Government should
make some decisions about recycling and maybe put some taxes on income about this.
For example, if you don’t respect the good bin or if you product too much waste you
should be punish. Usually, people only do the right thing because of rules, so it might be
possible to change a person as an eco-friendly. Moreover, instead of punishing people
they could give people a reward for their good action or even a large number of recycled
waste.
On the other hand, many ways could also enhance the responsibility to recycle. Laws are
not the only outcome, there is also the way to reward someone. In Peking, people can
change plastic bottle for underground ticket for example. This could be a reason that
people recycle more and try to be more aware about ecology. In addition, in some
countries the sensibilisation about recycling is well-known in school. Teachers are
teaching to children how to recycle their waste, why and where put their waste. Sooner
people are aware and better will improve the recycling process.
To sum up, regulate this process could give desire to people to recycle their domestic
waste. However, even with taxes and rules about recycling people should be reward. In
addition to the government, school should have a great impact and highlight how
important are there actions since the youngest age. As far as I am concerned, I think
that if people recycle less they should reduce their waste.

Learning to distinguish right from wrong at an early age is of great importance for
children. To help them learn the difference, punishment is necessary. I completely agree
with this point of view because getting punished is equivalent to facing the
consequences of one’s bad behavior. However, only mild punishments should be
allowed.
Punishment shows children their misbehavior has consequences. Take for example
teenage boys who bully disadvantaged kids at school. Not punishing them amounts to
encouraging their bullying behavior. This leads them to believe that they don’t need to
respect their peers from low-income families. Punishment, by contrast, helps them
realize their mistakes and that there are consequences of them. As a result, they may
very likely stop bullying others; otherwise, they will deal with the consequences again.
However, only mild punishments should be used to discipline children. At a young age,
children can be very rebellious. So, if parents scold or spank them for their misbehavior,
they may become even more rebellious. Instead, parents can use mild punishments,
such as taking away children’s pocket money and asking them to do household chores,
and at the same time educate them about why they receive the punishments. These
methods are unlikely to hurt their feelings and make them rebel more.
In conclusion, children should be punished if they misbehave because this lets them
know bad behavior brings bad consequences. However, it is important to take care to
not hurt their feelings; therefore, only mild punishments can be used to help them learn
to tell right from wrong.

Criminal activities have shown growth in most parts of the world. There are several reasons but in my
opinion two major reasons are lack of formal education and unemployment and they are related to each
other.

A recent study shows that crime rate has declined by approximately 30% in those countries where
better employment opportunities are available like South Korea, UAE and Qatar. To succeed in creating
better job opportunities the government should introduce right policies and implement them without
any discrimination. For instance, the UAE has introduced a new system that makes it easy to start your
own business and have strict labor law to protect employee rights which ultimately helps to divert
young people from any kind of criminal activities.

Another solution which can play an important role in preventing people especially youngsters from
indulging in any kind of illegal activities is formal education. China is the right example for that. Recently
Tim Cook CEO of Apple Corporation said in his interview that China holds the biggest pool of skilled labor
than any other country. This was only possible through introducing free formal technical education
policy to their young people and providing onsite experience at the same time. People can also play an
important role in reduction of crime rate by being more vigilant and responsible in their neighborhood.
