The Pastors Message

GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR WAYS HAGGAI 1:1-11
Haggai is a short prophetic book written to the exiles who have returned to Jerusalem. Not only is the composition short, the duration of the dated prophecies are also short. The time frame for the four prophecies of Haggai are all given within four months time. When the exiles returned to Jerusalem, what they found were merely rubbles. The city and the Temple they cherished were all lay in ruins. But when they began their rebuilding project, the Samaritans and other locals opposed them. Hence for around 18 years, the Temple remained in ruins. Some even excused themselves by saying that the 70 years of captivity as prophesied by Jeremiah is not yet completed. And to get involved in the rebuilding project is to go against the plan of God. Thus Haggai came to the scene. His first prophecy, dated August 29, 520 BC was directed against the self-centeredness of the Jews. They have the ability and the resources to live in paneled houses, but have nothing for the Temple of God. They give themselves extra measures of comfort, while allowing the house of God to lay in ruins. They have a deep spiritual problem. Their practice contradicts their faith. They do not love God nor the things that belong to God. They love only themselves. The outcome is: they are finding that all their efforts are in vain. God is not blessing the works of their hands any longer. Hence the directive: Give careful thought to your ways (5 times in Haggai). Literally, it means put your heart on the road. This is a call to seriously assess our priority, focus, desire, and practice. Do we really love the Lord? Is His priority our priority? Is His will our will? What changes should we make in our lives to show God that we truly love Him?

Opening Prayer Call to Worship Welcome Praise and Worship Sermon - Pastor Santos Yao Tithes and Offerings Announcements Benediction Closing Song
Being thankful is not telling God you appreciate the fact that your life is not in shambles. If that is the basis of your gratitude, you are on slippery ground. Every day of your life you face the possibility that a blessing in your life may be taken away. But blessings are only signs of God's love. The real blessing, of course, is the love itself. Whenever we get too attached to the sign, we lose our grasp on the God who gave it to us. Churches are filled with widows who can explain this to you. We are not ultimately grateful that we are still holding our blessings. We are grateful that we are held by God even when the blessings are slipping through our fingers. Craig Barnes
