STEP 1
Assess their letter sounds. If they are just getting started, stick to
single letter sounds. If they know all of their single letter sounds,
move on to more advanced sound patterns.
STEP 2
Assess their segmenting skills. Put simply, you want to learn how
many sounds they can hear and repeat back to you in any given
word.
STEP 3
Practice as much as possible. And don't practice random words. Use
your letter sound assessment to tell you which sounds to practice
and your segmenting skills assessment to tell you how many sounds
you should put in each word.
FIRST: Say the word and have them say it back to you
THEN: Ask them what sounds they hear in the word and listen/correct as
they say each of the sounds.
IMPORTANT: Make sure they get each sound correct before moving on!
NEXT: Have them to write each sound in the word (neat letters, starting
in the upper-right corner, with a finger space between each word).
FINALLY: Have them say each of the sounds as they write and read the
final word back to you.
