some pupils from Room B to Room A so that both rooms have the same number of

pupils. How many pupils were there om each room after the transfer?

235 + 567 = 802

There are 802 pupils altogether.

802 ÷ 2 = 401

There are 401 pupils in each room after the transfer.

12. The total cost of 8 identical books and 2 calculators is $166. The total cost of a

book and calculator is $47. How much does a calculator cost?

2 x 47 = 94 The cost of 2 books and 2 calculators is $94.

166 – 94 = 72 The cost of 6 books is $72.

72 ÷ 6 = 12 The cost of a book is $12.

47 – 12 = 35 The cost of a calculator is $35.


13. Nurul and Mei Shan had an equal number of sweets at first. After Nurul gave away

192 sweets and Mei Shan gave away 24 sweets, Mei Shan had 4 times as many sweets

as Nurul. How many sweets did each girl have at first?

3 units = 192 – 24 = 168

1 unit = 168 ÷ 3 = 56

56 + 192 = 248 Each girl has 248 sweets at first.

14. Lisa had four times as much money as Joshua. After their mother gave each of them

an equal amount of money. Lisa had thrice as much money as Joshua. If Joshua had

$42 in the end, how much money did Lisa have at first?

L = Lisa

J = Joshua

42 x 2 = 84

84 ÷ 3 = 28

28 x 4 = 112

15. Dion had 10 800 balloons. She packed 50 balloons into each bag. She used 175 bags

altogether. How many balloons were left unpacked?

10 800 ÷ 50 = 216

216 – 175 = 41

41 x 50 = 2050

2050 balloons were left unpacked.
