TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

1. General

A. This section contains instructions for testing and fault isolation of the main landing gear strut assembly.

B. References to item numbers in text correspond to same items numbers in the Illustrated Parts List.

2. Testing

A. Testing and Fault Isolation of Main Landing Gear Strut (See Figures 101, 102, and 1001.)

NOTE: The following tests will make sure of the correct operation of the strut assembly after
assembly. Before doing the test, visually check the main landing gear strut assembly for
damage.

The Vertical Position Leakage Test must be used to test a completely overhauled strut.

(1) Acquire necessary tools and equipment.

NOTE: Equivalent substitutes may be used in lieu of the following:

(2) Stroke Verification Test

(a) Open the air charging valve (335) and slowly stroke strut assembly from fully extended to fully
compressed.
(b) Measure fully compressed (L1) and fully extended (L2) dimensions. (See Figure 101.)
(c) Record difference between (L 1) and (L2). The difference must be within the range of 6.020
(±0.018) inches [15.291 (±0.0457) cm] with no binding evident during stroke.
(3) Hydraulic Fluid Filling
(a) Fill strut assembly with hydraulic fluid as follows:
1) Place the strut assembly in the acceptance test fixture.
2) Install the schrader valve servicing coupling with o-ring in the air valve port.
3) Connect a hydraulic line and hand pump to the air valve port.
4) Using the hand pump, slowly fill the strut assembly with hydraulic fluid until strut is fully
extended.
5) Slowly compress the strut assembly to allow air to escape from the strut.
6) Continue the cycle, with the hand pump and compressing the strut, until only oil (no foam)
comes from the air valve port.
7) Disconnect the hand pump from the strut.
8) Remove the schrader valve servicing coupling and o-ring from the air valve port.
9) Install the air valve (335) in the strut. Torque the air valve to 65 to 70 inch-pounds [7.34 to
7.91 Nm] and install the safety wire.
(4) Leakage Test
(a) With the strut assembly vertical position, pressurize with nitrogen to 20 psig [137.9 kPa] to fully
extend strut assembly.
(b) Pressurize with nitrogen to 486 (±25) psi [3351 (±172) kPa]. Allow time for pressure to stabi-
lize.
(c) Place strut assembly horizontally in the fully extended position.
(d) Allow the strut assembly to set in the horizontal position for 4 hours.
(e) Make sure that there is no fluid leakage or loss of pressure in the strut.

NOTE: Loss of pressure due to ambient temperature effects on the air-oil and any detect-
able error in test equipment scale reading is not to be interpreted as leakage.

(f) Bleed off the air pressure.

B. Vertical Position Leakage Test

NOTE: The following leakage test can be used to test a completely overhauled strut.

(1) Make sure that the strut is depressurized.

(2) Install a tee fitting to the air charging valve (335) and connect 0 to 3000 psi pressure gage to tee.
(3) Install the strut assembly in the acceptance test fixture.
(4) Service the strut to the normal operating pressure 486 (±25) psi [3351 (±172) kPa].
(5) Apply hydraulic pressure to the fixture actuator to compress the strut to 2020 psig, not to exceed
22.46 inches [57.05 cm] as shown in Figure 102, and secure in place.
(6) The pressure on the strut assembly will be 2020 (±20) psig [13927.5 (±138) kPa]. Allow pressure
to stabilize.
(7) Allow the strut assembly to set in this position for 6 hours.
(8) Make sure there is no fluid leakage.

NOTE: Loss of pressure due to ambient temperature effects on the air-oil and any detect-
able error in test equipment scale reading is not to be interpreted as leakage.

(9) Slowly release pressure from the fixture actuator and allow the strut to fully extend.
(10) Depressurize the strut.
(11) Remove the pressure gauge and tee fitting from the air charging valve (335).
(12) Remove strut assembly from acceptance test fixture.

DISASSEMBLY

1. General

A. If the main landing gear strut assembly removed from service shows no visual signs of damage, test
the main landing gear strut assembly to determine if maintenance is needed. (Refer to TESTING AND
FAULT ISOLATION.) This is to determine the extent of disassembly required without completely tear-
ing down and rebuilding the complete main landing gear strut assembly.

B. References to item numbers in text correspond to same item numbers in the Illustrated Parts List.

2. Disassembly

A. Disassembly of Main Landing Gear Strut (See Figure 1001)

(1) Acquire necessary tools and equipment.

NOTE: Equivalent substitutes may be used in lieu of the following:
