Exercise 1 Plants: Solanaceae Level: B1

1. Draw a generic plant and label it with the following parts: the stem,
the roots, leaves, fruits, and flowers. Indicate where a potato would
be found, and label it as well.

2. The Solanaceae (Solanazeo) family includes a wide variety of plants


that humans use. Some examples of these are petunias and
mandrakes (mandragorak). Can you give four more examples?

3. Why shouldn’t you eat green potatoes? What could happen if you
eat one or two? How about if you eat many?

4. Capsaicin is the substance responsible for the spiciness in bell and


chili peppers. Ginger and black pepper are also spicy. Do they also
have capsaicin?

5. Read the infographic below. Write down the words that you don’t
understand.
