Pesut Mahakam

One of the folklores of East Kalimantan which is quite popular is the Legend of the Pesut
Mahakam. This folklore is believed by some people until now.

Mahakam dolphins are one of the many endemic animals found in East Kalimantan. This
dolphin is a type of mammal similar to a dolphin.

In East Kalimantan, the Mahakam Dolphin is even used as the mascot for the province of
East Kalimantan. This is due to the presence of dolphins in the longest river in Kalimantan.

Even so, now the existence of the Pesut Mahakam is considered to be decreasing and
endangered. Mainly because its habitat is disturbed by human activities.

According to data from the Kutai Kartanegara Regency Government website, the status of
Mahakam dolphins is currently less than 100 individuals. Therefore these animals are now
included in the protected animals.
