 What is RFID Inventory Management?
A company’s inventory is a
complete list of items that it has
in stock to sell. Keeping track of
and managing a range of
inventory items can be time
consuming and potentially
inaccurate when using manual
or barcode methods. If no
method is used to manage
inventory, items will be lost and
stolen, costing a company money
and customer dissatisfaction if
certain items are out-of-stock.
If an RFID system is properly
setup and UHF RFID tags are
attached to inventory items, an
accurate inventory count can be
taken in minutes for any given
section. Because each item is
uniquely identified, if one is
missing, that item’s unique ID can
be entered into a handheld reader
and a “Geiger Counter” feature
can help to locate the item if it is
still onsite.
 Pros of Using RFID Tags
for Inventory Management
Improved visibility and faster scanning. Since RFID tags do not
require a “line-of-sight” scan like barcodes, it is possible to read them
at a distance for fast inventory processing.

Reduced labor costs. With labor costs accounting for as much as 50-
80% of distribution center costs, RFID offers potential benefits in
this area. Inventory check-in, counting, and shipment verification can
be done very quickly and automatically in a few scans without the need
for multiple employees to process them.

Tracking of returnable assets. For those companies that utilize a

returnable fleet of assets such as containers and pallets, there is often a
significant capital investment to protect. Utilizing RFID allows you to
track these assets through the entire supply chain loop and provide
increased visibility on inventory locations. This has the added benefit
of improving returns and reducing theft or neglect.
