Teachers’ Roles in Using Technology During Teaching and Learning

What is teachers’ role?

 According to Kaur (2019), teachers are the controller, prompter, resources, assessor,
organizer, participants, and tutor. In the classroom, teachers play a very significant role
in providing learners/students with an interesting classroom environment for students.
 Teachers oversees the classroom, hence there should be encouragement for the students
to participate during class activity. Teachers also must make themselves open for any
lacking during class activities and provide the students with resources so that students
can perform well with all the knowledge.
 Not only teachers control the teaching materials, learners’ steps during the teaching and
learning process so that the learners/students stay on the path (Yan, 2012).

Relation between technology and teaching and learning

 Due to COVID-19 pandemic, teaching and learning undergo virtually using technology
(Ahad et al., 2020; Alakrash & Razak, 2021) . Virtual platforms such as Google
Classroom, Google Meet, ZOOM, and many more platforms were and are currently
used for educational purpose.
 In addition, global is facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 where many daily activities
use technology and virtually.
 Technology such as big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things, cybersecurity, and
Artificial Intelligence (AI) influence many industries. While it does not directly impact
education field, rapid technological development forces society to explore and learn
about technology so as not to be left behind.
 To keep up with the technology development, one must master it.

Teachers’ roles during teaching and learning using technology.

 Teachers’ roles using tech are almost same as during traditional teaching and learning.
 Teacher prepares lesson plan before starting to organize activities during teaching and
learning. Teacher may demonstrate the activities before students engage during the
lesson so that they know what to do. For example, teacher should demonstrate on how
to use Kahoot before students can use it.
 Teachers also provide materials to support students before teaching and learning
process. Other than providing materials, teachers play role in providing support, when
necessary, particularly during teaching and learning using technology. For instance,
students less clear about what needs to be done during the teaching and learning. Then
teachers must provide examples and explanations.
 Guidance for usage of latest technology during teaching and learning. Use of
technology widely use due to pandemic COVID-19 and progress of IR 4.0. Teachers
guide and instruct student for usage of technology such as virtual learning platform
(Quizziz, Quizlet, Kahoot). Use of technology also can ensure the teaching and learning
is fun, interactive, and interesting.
 Teachers should prompt students during the teaching and learning especially when
using technology as students might be not focused during teaching and learning to
create class engagement. This is to ensure students are interested, focus, learn,
participate during the session, and make learning more fun.
 As a teacher, one should also hone students’ interpersonal skills. During teaching and
learning, teachers supposed to encourage students participate to enhance student
communication and social skills. Other than that, this action provides and create
learners centred education.
 Even though the teaching and learning went online, teacher must assess students’
comprehension. Level of understanding of students must be identified to ensure that the
teaching and learning sessions are successful.
