BUSINESS

Telephoning is an important part of doing business in


English. Telephone conversations, especially business
telephone conversations, follow certain patterns:
Someone answers the phone and asks if they can help.
The caller makes a request—either to be connected to
someone or for information

Ms Clarkson:
Good morning, Second Planet. This is Adrianna Clarkson speaking. How may I help you?
Mr Olsen:
Yes, this is Frank Olsen calling. May I speak to Ms Larry, please?
Ms Clarkson:
I’m afraid Ms Larry is out of the office today. Would you like to leave a message?
Mr Olsen:
This call is rather important, actually. We spoke yesterday about the funding agreement. I’d like to follow-up on a few terms mentioned in
the agreement. Did she leave any information with you?
Ms Clarkson:
As a matter of fact, she did. She has discussed it already and will send the details about the revised terms in the agreement.
Mr Olsen:
I’m afraid the information is not clear enough.
Ms Clarkson:
I’m terribly sorry about that. In the meantime, Ms Larry has asked me to put you through Mr Darrell of the Finance Department and Ms
Scott of the Business Development Department. I will arrange an online meeting with them today and inform you soon. What do you feel
after lunch break? Will 1pm be okay with you?
Mr Olsen:
That would be perfect. I’m looking forward to the meeting.
Ms Clarkson:
Excellent. I will inform Ms Larry about this meeting and ask her if she has time to join.
Mr Olsen:
Thank you for your help.
Ms Clarkson:
My pleasure. Have a great day.
