1 Introduction
1.1 Background and purpose of the visit

The 47th meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of National Mission for Clean
Ganga (NMCG) was held on 22.02.2023 at 11:00 PM under the Chairmanship of
Director General (DG), NMCG.

After detailed discussions Executive Committee (EC) resolved to approve the

proposal for according administrative approval and expenditure sanction (AA&ES)
for Survey, Investigations & DPR Preparation for Rejuvenation & Conservation of
Shahdara Drain With Nature-Based Treatment - Soil Bio-Technology (SBT) Under
Namami Gange for an estimated amount of ₹1.06 Crore (component wise details
are in the table below) under NGP-Non EAP funding, subject to the following
conditions:

a) EA/ NABCONS shall ensure that field activities shall be carried out strictly
following the timelines and technical specifications proposed.

b) DPR will be prepared in house under supervision of the NMCG team by

engaging a consultant.

2 Overview of the site visit/trip

2.1 Technical details of the projects visited
Major Components of the proposal are as follows:

1. Survey and mapping:

 Drone Survey (28 Km x 0.5 Km either side)
o The drone survey shall be carried out all along drain with corridor up to 1.0
km with 0.5 km either side with a very high resolution drone camera, and
Ground sampling distance (GSD) of minimum 10 cm.
 Bathymetric Survey
o The bathymetry data shall be collected representing the Drain in equal
spaced interval using Double frequency Echo Sounder. It also includes the
spot sounding/Topographic Spot leveling.

 Field Survey/ Data Collection (C/S Sections & L-Sections)(Total Station &
DGPS)

o The Topographic survey shall be carried out all along both side of drain
with corridor up to 15 meter either side from drain.
2. Investigations:

 Inlet Drain Discharge

o The flow measurement of drain flow shall be measured all along the drain
and various representative locations with flow meters.
 Water Quality
o The water quality sampling shall be done at regular interval or inlets and
any changes in the visibility and color of the drain. The proper sampling
methods shall be required to be used for the samples.
 Soil/ Sludge Properties
o The geotechnical investigation for the soil and sludge at regular interval for any
change in the topography for the sludge analysis and sludge assessment shall be
carried out.

3. DPR Preparation: Detailed Project report including Design, Bill of Quantity and
Estimate for the project shall be prepared.

4. Engagements: Prof. H.S. Shankar from IIT Bombay, who has developed this
technology, shall be the consultant for the project for three months.

2.2 Details of visit- Agenda

To check & understand the survey work status.

2.2.1 Project background

The experimental treatment of the sewage entering into the drain was tried through
Nature-Based Treatment - Soil Bio-Technology (SBT). The main purpose of the
experiment was to reduce the pollution load through the process of slow oxidation
before its final discharge into the main river channel. To remove the solid waste
entering into the drain collectors have been placed at the starting point of the drain.

The drain receives household sewage and industrial waste.

2.2.2 Key Observations during the visit

A. It has been observed that team is using of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) for
Ground Control Points (GCPs) in drone data acquisition as a crucial step to ensure the accuracy and
georeferencing of the acquired imagery.

A. GCP Equipment and Preparation:

 DGPS Receiver: Using a high-precision DGPS receiver capable of providing mm-level

accuracy.

 Survey Markers: Deployment of GCP markers with known coordinates (from a prior survey)
on the ground in the survey area.

2. GCP Selection:

 GCP locations has been selected by drone team strategically across the survey area to
ensure good spatial coverage.

3. DGPS Survey:

 Settig up the DGPS receiver at a known point with accurate coordinates (a base station) at
Mauzpur for continuous observations

 Start logging data from the base station.

 Two DGPS rover unit, visit each GCP location and record coordinates.

4. Real time Kinematics:

 DGPS data differential correction techniques applied to enhance accuracy using RTK

B. A bathymetry survey for the Shahadara Drain in Delhi involves measuring the water depth of the
drain to create a detailed depth map of its underwater terrain.

1. Equipment and Preparation:

 Bathymetric Survey Boat: Utilizing a specialized survey boat equipped with the necessary
instrumentation for depth measurement.

 Echo Sounder: Installed a high-precision echo sounder on the survey boat. The echo
sounder emits sound waves that bounce off the riverbed, and the time taken for the sound to
return is used to calculate water depth.

 GPS and IMU: Combine the echo sounder with Global Positioning System (GPS) and an
Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to accurately geo-reference the depth measurements.

 Data Logging Software: Using specialized bathymetry data logging software to collect and
record depth data along with GPS and IMU data.

 Safety Measures: Ensured the safety of the survey team, provide life jackets, and follow all
safety protocols.

2. Survey Planning:

 Plan the survey route along the Shahadara Drain Cross Section at 100 meter and longitudinal
section, covering the entire area of interest.

 Determined the spacing and density of survey lines based on the desired level of detail and
accuracy.

3. Survey Execution:

 Survey boat into the Shahadara Drain at the designated starting point.

 Start the echo sounder and data logging equipment.

 The survey boat follows predefined survey lines, and depth measurements are continuously
recorded as the boat moves.

 Surveyors should take care to maintain a consistent survey speed.

5. Other Observations:

 The drain is having high discharge roughly at 1.0 meter per second (by visual
observations )

 The drain is filthy and bad smell is emerging out.

 There is no aquatic life.

 The bed of drain and nearby area is full of sludge/soil/solid waste.
