Hydraulic Fan Speed - Test and Adjust

SMCS - 1395-035

Rotating fan blades can result in personal injury or death.

Stop the engine and allow the fan to come to a complete stop before
making any test or adjustment.

Before starting the engine, make sure all of the finger guards are
installed and the guard door is closed. Do not allow any tools or test
equipment to protrude or vibrate into the path of the rotating fan
blades.

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the
engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is
not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and
the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil
filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool
enough to touch with your bare hand.

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause

personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Test Preparation
Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Testing and Adjusting".

Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1087, "348-5430 Multi-Tool Group 2".

Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure-Release".

1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and
personnel. Lower the work tools to the ground.

2. Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of
the operator.

3. Engage the parking brake.

4. Place the transmission switch in NEUTRAL position.

5. Place the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

Note: Care must be taken to avoid contact with fan blades during test. secure all test equipment
before beginning tests.

Note: Ensure that the brake accumulators are fully charged before you begin the following
procedure. While the brake accumulators are charging, high pressure will be at the load sensing port.

1. Connect two 25000 kPa (3626 psi) pressure gauges to pressure taps (5, 4) on the pump discharge line
and on the load sensing line.

2. Ensure that the hydraulic oil is at operating temperature. Run the engine at high idle.

3. The difference between the 2 gauges is the margin pressure. The margin pressure should be
1600 ± 100 kPa (232 ± 15 psi)

4. If the margin pressure is out of range, loosen the locknut on margin spool (3). Adjust margin spool
(3) until the differential is 1600 ± 100 kPa (232 ± 15 psi). Tighten the locknut on the margin spool.

High Pressure Cutoff (Testing and Adjusting)

1. Connect a 25000 kPa (3626 psi) pressure gauge to fan pump supply pressure tap (5).

2. Disconnect the fan solenoid.

3. The fan pump supply pressure should be 22500 ± 350 kPa (3263 ± 50 psi).

4. If the fan pump supply pressure is not 22500 ± 350 kPa (3263 ± 50 psi), loosen the locknut on high-
pressure cutoff spool (2). Continue to run the machine at high idle. Adjust the high-pressure cutoff
spool until the gauge reads 22500 ± 350 kPa (3263 ± 50 psi). Tighten the locknut on the high-
pressure cutoff spool.

5. Reconnect the fan solenoid when the adjustment is completed.

Hydraulic Fan Speed-Check

Hydraulic Fan speed is automatically controlled by the engine ECM. The fan speed is variable and fan
rotation will reverse for purging debris from the cooling package. The reverse mode is on a timer.

Note: Use tooling "D" to perform this test.

Note: Before any tests are performed, visually inspect the complete fan hydraulic system for oil leaks and
damaged parts.

1. Remove right-hand side plates to gain access to the hydraulic cooling fan and fan reversing manifold
solenoid.

2. Disconnect fan solenoid (1) from the Fan / Brake charging manifold.

3. Clean a small area on the surface of one fan blade. Attach 13 mm (0.50 inch) of 1U-6605 Reflective
Tape (2) on the fan blade. Position tape (2) so that the tape is visible.

4. Start the engine and bring hydraulic oil up to operating temperature.

5. Run the engine at high idle. Aim the 9U-5140 Photo Pickup at the reflective tape on the fan blade.
Speed of the fan blade should be 2000 ± 50 rpm.

6. Reduce the speed of the engine to low idle. Stop the engine. Remove tooling and replace panels.

Calibrating Fan Speed in ET

This section will calibrate the engine cooling fan speed in Cat ET. The engine cooling fan hydraulic
pressures should be verified before this calibration procedure.

1. Connect to Cat® ET. Start the engine and ensure the hydraulic oil is at operating temperature.

2. Navigate to "Engine Cooling Fan Calibration" and follow the instructions on the screen as shown
below.
