Zamboanga City Flooding

I. Context
One of the most devastating natural calamities is flooding. It occurs when a large amount of
water collects in any region. It is frequently caused by heavy rain. Floods disrupt the day-to-day
operations of the affected area. Severe floods can cause widespread devastation. Floods claim the
lives of many people and animals. Several others have been injured. Floods also cause an
increase in disease transmission. The stagnant water attracts mosquitos, which spread diseases
like malaria and dengue fever.
Flooding in Zamboanga City caused by different typhoons over the years, inflicting property
damage, loss of human life, agricultural devastation, animal loss, and deterioration of health
conditions due to waterborne infections. Floods are caused mostly by rain, which soils cannot
absorb quickly enough, or by rivers and canals that are overflowing.
Which floodings affect the person's health and give us a disease, such as leptospirosis, when
the person has contact with water that is contaminated by animal urine and contacts the person's
open wound, you are most likely infected.

II. Causes
Flooding caused by heavy rains caused by a low pressure system. Flooding can also be
caused by clogged drainage systems. Plastics, trash, and poor drainage cause clogged drainage
systems in which excess rainwater is insufficiently accommodated, causing it to overflow and
inundate the surface.
Flooding is mostly caused by heavy rains, intense rains, or overflowing rivers. Prolonged
rainfalls occur when rains continue for an extended period of time, while intense rainfalls occur
when the water collected by the rain exceeds the normal rain, and finally overflowing rivers,
which are also caused by flooding. Overflowing rivers can be caused by excessive rainfall and
long period rainfalls, causing the rivers to exceed their capacity.
Be aware of your surroundings and be on the lookout for signs that could lead to flash floods.
As well as being prepared for natural disasters. Another option is to clear clogged drainage
systems in order to divert excess rainwater and slow the rise of floods.

III. Effects

Floodwaters can endanger lives, inundate homes and businesses, destroy belongings, damage
vital infrastructure, and obstruct access to essential public services as they spread. Floods can
make physical damage to properties, transportation, and to the people who works.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth. Its islands are regularly
impacted by floods, typhoons, landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, and droughts because they are
located along the boundary of major tectonic plates and at the center of a typhoon belt.
According to Havard (2018).

Floods may lead the people to poverty and corruption. How do floods affect people,
particularly the poor, who live in flood-prone areas? What draws them to these areas, and how do
they deal with the effects of flooding?

While both rich and poor people are affected by high-intensity flood events, poor people are
more likely to be affected by smaller, more frequent floods. Cheap housing and easy access to
jobs attract poorer people to flood-prone areas. While poverty slows recovery in most cities,
access to a consistent source of income, such as formal and informal financing and community-
saving groups, is more important. People who were poorer were less likely to recover quickly.

Poverty is closely linked to increased flood risk in developing-country cities. Poverty

contributes to flooding vulnerability in a variety of ways, from increased risk of exposure to
lower access to coping mechanisms that can aid recovery. However, not all poor people are
affected equally or in the same way. Factors such as the family's source of income, access to
finance, both formal and informal, and tenure arrangements all play a role.

There are active organization and projects around Philippines which some projects are only
intended to certain places such as the Metro Manila Flood Managemen (MMFM) Project which
the project is for Manila, Pasay, Taguig, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasig,
Valenzuela, Quezon City and Caloocan. And more in the future.

The Metro Manila Flood Management (MMFM) has 36 pumping stations that are currently
in operation and 20 new stations that will support the vitally important waterways. Due to the
recent heavy rains, my suggestion is to include Zamboanga City. Pumping stations should be
installed in other locations as well; Zamboanga City is not the only one. Zamboanga City Water
District (ZCWD) They may be involved in managing the city's drainage system and ensuring that
it is functioning properly to prevent flooding. And Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA): This is a government agency responsible for
providing weather forecasts and warnings. They may be involved in providing early warning
systems for potential flooding events and helping residents prepare for such events.

Flood management dams, river improvements, and floodways are examples of structural or
engineering solutions, whereas non-structural mitigation measures include land use regulations,
watershed conservation, reforestation, and preparedness measures such as improving flood
warning systems, rainfall and water level gauging stations, and information systems.

Pump stations provide protection for areas by removing large amounts of water and preventing
flooding. There is a need for large, dependable pumping systems that can handle large volumes
of water because many cities and municipalities are situated on or close to bodies of water.
Others are situated in flat terrain where natural water runoff is difficult and slow.

Government agencies such as the Zamboanga City Water District and the Department of
Public Works and Highways can play a key role in implementing infrastructure projects and
managing the city's drainage systems. Solving the issue of flooding in Zamboanga City will
require a multi-faceted approach that involves the participation and collaboration of different
sectors of society. By working together and implementing a range of solutions, it is possible to
reduce the impact of flooding and create a safer and more resilient city.
