C6 EQUIPMENT- AND PIPELINE NUMBERING

CONTENT 1 General
2 Position number
3 Pipeline number

APPENDIX I Department names and numbering

2 (11)

1
GENERAL

All machinery and equipment shall have position number in

accordance with the following system.

2
POSITION NUMBER

Position number is formed of department number, equipment group

character and running number according to following example:

Example: 122K206
│ │ │ Running number
│ │ └───────
│ │ Equipment group character
│ └───────────────
│ Department number
└──────

DEPARTMENT NUMBER

Department number in position number is based on that process

department in which the equipment belongs. If the equipment does not
belong to processes mentioned in Appendix I, for example service
piping and air conditioning, the general number 110, 120, 130, 140, 150
or 160 of the mill block in question can be used.

EQUIPMENT GROUP CHARACTER

One letter is used without hyphen between department and running

number as an equipment group character. Equipment group
characters are following:

A = instruments
B = agitators
C = conveyors, transport equipment
D = drives, gears
E = electrical equipment
F = process air-conditioning equipment, gas and combustion
gas handling equipment
G = ventilation and heating system equipment (HVAC)
H = hydraulic- and lubrication equipment
L = cranes, hoisting equipment, lifts
3 (11)

M = process machinery, process equipment (machinery and

equipment in general)
P = pumps, vacuum pumps
R = rollers, cylinders
S = buildings
T = tanks, towers,, chests, basins
V = valves and fittings
W = heat exchangers

RUNNING NUMBER

Running number, 001-999, is under each department and equipment

group starting from number 001. Valves and fittings shall have running
number 0001-9999.

Examples:

Pumps position number is formed of:

- Department number
- Pump equipment group character P
- Running number

Example: 122P006
│││
│ │ │ Running number
│ │ └───────
│ │ Pump equipment group character P
│ └─────────
│ Department number
└──────

In addition to the pump position number in the flow diagram shalI be

marked:

- volume flow, l/s

- pump head, Lc = meter liquid column
- Nominal suction size, DN1/ mm
- Nominal pressure size, DN2/ mm
4 (11)

Example:

122P006 POSITION NUMBER

25 x 30 l/s x m
125/100 DN1/DN2

Tank and agitator position number is formed of:

- Department number
- Tank/agitator equipment group character T/B
- Running number

Example: 126T006
│││
│ │ │ Running number
│ │ └───────
│ │ Tank equipment group character T
│ └──────────
│ Department number
└──────

In addition to the tank position number in the flow diagram shalI be

marked:

- Name of the tank

- Net volume of the tank
- Operation temperature
- Properties of the content (process information)
- Hight of the tank overflow or max. operation pressure of the tank
5 (11)

126T006

126B011

Ventilation and heating system equipment (HVAC) position number is

formed of:

- Department number
- HVAC equipment group character G
- Running number

Example: 120G006
│ │ │ Running number
│ │ └───────
│ │ HVAC equipment group character G
│ └───────
│ Department number
└──────

When the ventilation equipment is connected to a certain sub-process,

the position number shall be selected from that group.

Equipment position number furnished with = mark is used for process

equipment electrical application circuit number. When process
equipment are numbered, number series 800-999 from running
numbers 001…999 are left unused. Numbers 800-999 are reserved only
for electrical equipment and control circuits on process departments (for
example electric tracing circuits and group start circuits). In department
160 “Power distribution” numbers 100-999 are reserved for electrical
equipment and control circuits.

On mill blocks (10, 20, 30, 40, 70 or 80) number series 500-999 are left
unused when process equipment are numbered. Number series 500-
6 (11)

999 are reserved only for electrical equipment and control circuits (for
example lighting feeds, emergency and telecommunication equipment).

Instrumentation equipment group character is A. Instrument circuits are

numbered by department with running number starting from 1001.

Manual on-off valve and fitting position number is formed of:

- Department number
- Valve and fitting equipment group character V
- Running number of valves and fittings in the department (0001-
9999)

Example: 121V0006
│ │ │ Running number
│ │ └───────
│ │ Valve and fitting equipment group number V
│ └──────────────
│ Department number
└──────

In addition to the valve and fitting position number in the flow diagram
shalI be marked:

- Valve and fitting type code

- Pressure equipment class
- Nominal size

Valve and fitting position number

┌────────────────

121V0006
133II-200
│ │ │ Nominal size
│ │ └──────────
│ │ Pressure equipment class
│ └────────────
│ Valve and fitting type code
└─────────────

Valve type codes are specified in the project document S17.

7 (11)

Valve pressure equipment class is based on the pressure equipment or

pipeline it is connected to. Safety valves pressure equipment class is
IV.

3
PIPELINE NUMBER

Pipeline number is formed of department number and running number.

Example: 1210006
│ │
│ │ Running number
│ └───────
│ Department number
└──────

In addition to the pipeline number in the flow diagram shalI be marked:

- Flow substance code (see S17)

- Nominal pipe size
- Pipe class (see S17 and S29)

Example: 1210006-PBB-400-4H1A
│ │ │ │ Pipe class
│ │ │ └─────
│ │ │ Nominal pipe size
│ │ └──────────
│ │ Flow substance code
│ └──────────
│ Pipeline number
└────────

In case of a pressure equipment line or even if part of the line is under

pressure equipment classification, the pressure equipment class (I-III)
shall be marked at the end of the pipeline marking. Pipelines under
chemical law shall be marked with character C and lines of flammable
liquids with character F. These pipeline classification markings are
described in detail in project document S30.

Department number in the pipeline number is defined for process

pipelines and for headers of service pipelines according to that
department where the pipeline and the flow starts. Running number
is based on the number of headers in the department and on the
number of branch pipes from them.

All headers and their branches shall have own line numbers. However,
short secondary branches need not to be numbered separately.
8 (11)

Also pump suction side nozzle shall have an own line number if it’s pipe
class is not the same as the pipe class of the pump pressure side.

Branching pipe from the header can be considered as a start point of

the flow and it shall have that department number where the branch
point is situated.

Borderline shall be marked in the flow sheet at the place where the
department number changes in the pipeline number.

Example

The example above shows only the principle how to create line
numbers for headers and branch pipes using department and running
number.
At the left side of the picture the header and the branch pipe are
situated at the same department and the department numbers are the
same for the header and the branch pipes.
At the right side of the picture the starting point of the header is in a
different department than the branch pipe. The border line at the
branching point and the change of the department number in the
pipeline numbers are shown.

The flow substance code shall be taken from the list of flow substances
S17.

The pipe class is determined in accordance with project instruction S17

and piping standard S29.
