The switchover of India from an independent Commonwealth realm with the British Monarch as the nominal head of the Indian Dominion toa completely sovereign republic inside the Commonwealth of Nations having the President of India as the nominal head of the Indian Union is also commemorated on this day. wwew.byjusexamprep.com History of Republic Day of Indi After the indian independence struggle, India gained independence from the British Raj on August 15°, 1947. The Indian Independence Act of 1947, an Act of the United Kingdom Parliament, partitioned British India into two new sovereign Dominions within the British Commonwealth (later Commonwealth of Nations). India became a constitutional monarchy on August 15", 1947, with George VIas head of the state and Earl Mountbatten being the governor-general. However, the nation lacked a permanent constitution, and its laws were based on the colonial Governmont of India Act 1935, which had been altered. On August 29", 1947, a motion wes introduced calling for the formation of a Drafting Committee to design permanent constitution, with Dr. BR Ambedkar as its. chairman, While India’s Independence Day commemorates the country’s independence from British rule, the Republic Day commemorates the country’s constitution’s entry into force. The committee drafted a constitution and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly on November 4", 1947. Before adopting the Constitution, the Assembly met for about 166 days in public sessions lasting 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days. After extensive deliberation and some amendments, the 308 members of the Constituent Assembly signed two handwritten versions of the document (one in Hindi and one in English) on January 24", 1950, It went into force two days later, on January 26”, 1950, across the entire country. Dr. Rajendra Prasad began his first tenure as Presidentof the Indian Union on that day. Under the new Constitution's transitional provisions, the Constituent Assembly became the Indian Parliament. The mys Congress party declared that the Indians would celebrate “Independence Day” on January 26", 1930. On the riverbank of the Ravi river in Lahore, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, President of the Congress Party, unfurled the tricolour. For the next 17 years, this, day was known as Poorna Swaraj Day. When the Indian Constitution was adopted on November 26%, 1949, many people thought it was important to commemorate and enforce the document on January 26", a day associated with national pride. He continued his research at the IACS at this time. His research was on acoustics and optics. It vas at IACS that Raman along with his collaborators discovered what is now called the ‘Raman Effect’. This discovery on the scattering of light was made on February 28, 1928. This effect proved the quantum nature of light and had huge value at that time. The Raman Spectroscopy was based on this phenomenon. Consequently, February 28 is celebrated as National Science Day in India since 1987 annually discovery. in honour of this For this discovery, Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1930, The Nobel Committee stated that the award was given “for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect named after him”. He was the first Indian, Asian and non-white person to win a Nobel Prize for the sciences, In 1933, he became the first Indian Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bangalore.
