HW3 and Solution
HW3 and Solution
1. (10 pts) A crystal ball with index of refraction n =1.6 has a radius
of 5 cm. An object is placed 6 cm away from the edge of the ball.
(a) How far is the image measured from the other edge of the ball?
(b) What is the ratio of the image size to the object size?
You can start from the formula below.
However it is for a single surface. So you have to apply the formula twice and take into account
the distance d = 10 cm between the two surfaces.
2. (10 pts) Continuing problem 1, since this is a thick lens, the focal length should be measured from
the principle points.
(a) What is the effective focal length of this crystal ball?
(b) Where is the location of the principle points H1 and H2 of the lens?
4. (10 pts) Two thin lenses form a compound lens system. The two
lenses have focal length f1 = 7.5 cm and f2 = -7.5 cm respectively,
and are separated by d = 5 cm. The lenses are in air.
Calculate the position of the two nodal points N1and N2.
5. (10 pts) A fiber has indices of 1.481 (core nf) and 1.461(cladding nc).
(a) If its core diameter is 100 m. Determine the fiber’s acceptance angle when it is operated in
air (na = 1).
(b) If the core diameter is 2 m, what is the cut-off wavelength above which this fiber works as a
single-mode fiber?
1. (a) use ------------------------(1)
find h1 = 5 cm, h2 = -5 cm, which means they are both at the center of the ball.
3.
4.
1 1 1 d
(a) find the effective focal length, f = 11.25 cm
f f1 f 2 f1 f 2
f1 (d f 2 ) f (d f1 )
(b) f . f .l = 18.75 cm b. f .l 2 = 3.75 cm
d ( f1 f 2 ) d ( f1 f 2 )
so N1 is in front of L1 by 18.75-11.25 = 7.5 cm
N2 is in front of L2 by 11.25-3.75 = 7.5 cm or in front of L1 by 2.5 cm.
