Giuseppe Rabboni
Cliuseppe l\abboni (1800 - 1856) rvas born in (lremona, Italy, a ciry* more noted for its violin rnakers
than for its flautists. Apart fronr being a virtuoso flute player, Rabboni r.vas also a composer, a
protbssor at the Conservatory of Milan and Solo Flute at La Scala Opera in Milan - a position he
held for thirty years (1826 - 1856).
The first half of the nineteenth century was a particularly fascinating period in music. In the early
1820s both Schubert and Beethoven cornposed their rrirrth syrnphonies. Other prorninent
contemporaries of Rabboni u,'ere Berlioz, Brahms, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Saint-Saens. The
generation of Bizet, Borodin, Bruckner, Mussorgsky, Rirnsk-v-Korsakov and Smetana was also in its
infancy.
However, in Italy, the world of opera was enjoying solnething of a golden era, featuring composers
suchas Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and later on Verdi and Puccini.
Frorn his compositions and arrangelnents it is clear that Rabboni u,'as not only a rnaster of his
instmment, but also a remarkable musician, rn,hose aim was to expand the range of possibilities on the
instrument that he clear'ly loved.
Paul Edmund-Davies
Paul Edmund-Davies was fbr 20 years the Solo Flute of the London S,r,rnphony Orchestra. For the
past fir,e years he has held the sarne position in the Philharrnonia Orchestra and is currently Principal

The Sonatas of Giuseppe Rabboni
Many years ago, in a second-hand shop in Hungerlord (UK), I discovered a tattered old book
containing much of the flute music of Giuseppe Rabboni and was imrnediatel), fascinated as to lvh,v
this music \ ras no longer readily available. It transpired that his original publishers (Lucca Presso) were
taken over by Riccordi. After a n-rajor fire at their main warehouse in Milan in the second rvorld r,var
a vast quantiry of music had been destro,r,'ed, including much of that from Rabboni.
In the original book, there are forry rwo one movernent Sonatas by Rabboni, aimed at exploring
sonoriry and developing technique. He was clear§ a great adrnirer of the hurun voice and its
sirnilarities rvith sound production on the flute. These sonatas certainly encourage the performer to
approach the task in hand in a vocal nlanner.
F{olvever, it transpires that Rabboni also had rnagpie tendencies, as many of these pieces are
arrangelnents of rhe music of other composers (an example being No. 13, which is in fact taken from
a sketch of the slou. movement of an oboe sonata by l)onizetti, but rewritten up a fourthl). I have
yet to find anr- of the original piano accompaniments.
Paul Edmr.rnd-Davies
The process of rvriting accompaniments to a solo musical line holds certain responsibilities. For
nmny years no\\, it has been universally recognized thar the addition of music to a filnr has a direct
effect on atmosphere and mood and in a sirnilar lnanner, the addition of an accompanimerrt to a solo
line can play a significant part in shaping dramatic content. These twelve Sonatas of Rabboni, whilst
rnodest in high drama, do have a particular ear-ly nineteenth sfvle and character, which I have aimed
to reflect in the piano accomparriments.
John Alley
Editorial Note
The slurs are virtually all original r,vhilst the dynamic ancl tenrpi irrstructions are those of Paul and
John.
