Math and Technology

Newletter
ELEMENTARY: MS. REDMOND 3RD GRADE

Hello 3rd Grade Families!

I am excited to introduce everybody to our new math and technology applications and websites! We
will be using these technological tools to help with student’s comprehension of fractions. This unit we
be working on understanding and comparing fractions, as well as equivalent fractions. These
interactive and highly visual technology applications allow students to solve for equivalent fractions,
make sense of comparing fractions, and can be a tool to assist in worksheets and homework both in
class and at home. Engaging with technology in our curriculum allows for students to become more
technologically literate in an academic setting. Not only this, but students will be able to use
technology to further their understanding of mathematical content by problem solving and
manipulating virtual representations. These techniques will allow for further understanding of rational
numbers including decimals and proportions as we will be able to use these platforms upon studying
these concepts as well.

What We Will Use:

Click on the picture to access site.

SplashLearn has free and accessible math games. It can be used

on a computer browser, or downloaded as an app on a tablet.
Upon entering your email and child’s grade, you will see a
section for fraction games. These games are engaging and
include fun animated visuals. Students will be able to play games
related to understanding and representing fractions, comparing
fractions, and equivalent fractions. Students will be able to
visualize the proportional relationships between equal fractions,
and compare equivalent fractions. This program includes
wonderful fraction bars to help our learners visualize the
mathematical concepts.

Didax Virtual Fraction Manipulator

This next tool is called didax.com. This tool allows students to create their own
comparisons, and manipulate fractions as small as 1/16, When solving problems on
a worksheet or howork, students can use this virtual manipulative to compare
fractions, make them equal, and experiment. The simple drag-and-drop method
of this website is easy to use, and supports the students’ ability to understand
fractional relationships and solve these problems independently. Here is an
example of how students can make sense of parts of one whole using 1/5 and 1/10
in a few different ways. We will utilize this website, especially the 1/10 feature upon
studying decimals, and we will be able to convert decimals to fractions with help
from this manipulative. Another great thing about this tool is that students can
check and correct their own work as they go!

Thank you for your dedication to helping your mathematicians! As

always, please reach out with any questions or comments.
