2. PEBBLES AND GRAINS: pebbles are small round stones that were used for counting. Grains
from the farm such as corn, beans and rice were also used for counting.
3. COWRIES: These are the highly polished, usually brightly colored shell of small snail found in
warm seas. They are used as money and for other counting needs.
4. STICKS: These include the canes, clubs and shaped woods that were used for measuring land
area and for other counting and measuring needs.
5. WRITING ON THE WALL: In early ages, man learnt to use objects like charcoal, mud and
limestone to write stroke on the wall for counting

1. ABACUS: Abacus is a calculation tool used by sliding counters along rods or grooves, it is one
of the first counting mechanical devices used for calculation. Abacus is a small device that consists
of beads strung on wire or wooden rod in a rectangular frame, which slides easily. The Chinese
were the first to use abacus. It is used for addition and subtraction of numbers.

3. ENIAC
This means Electronic numerical integrator and computer. ENIAC was built at the University of
Pennsylvania between 1943 and 1945 by two professors John Mauchly and prosper Eckert.
ENIAC filled a 20 by 40 foot room, weighed 30 tons, and used more than 18,000 vacuum tubes
generated waste heat like a light bulb and all this heat (174,000 watts of heat) meant that the
computer could only be operated in a specially designed room with its own heavy duty air
conditioning system.
Note:
Other computing devices invented by John Mauchly and prosper Eckert are
i. UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer)
ii. EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer)

GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER
Generations of Computers is a terminology used to refer to the changes undergone by computer
over the years.
The development of electronic computers can be divided into five generations depending upon the
technologies used.
The following are the five generations of computers.
FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS (1942-1955)
The beginning of commercial computer age is from UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer). It
was developed by two scientists Mauchly and Echert at the Census Department of United States in
1947. The first generation computers were used during 1942-1955. They were based on vacuum
tubes. (Vacuum tubes are electronic device that controls the flow of electron in a tube)
Examples of first generation computers are ENIVAC (electronic numerical integrators and
computer) and UNIVAC (electronic discrete variable automatic computer)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS

13. Used magnetic drums which provide very less data storage.
14. Used punch cards for input.
15. Not versatile and very faulty.
Advantages
1. Smaller in size as compared to the first generation computers.
2. The 2nd generation Computers was more reliable
3. Used less energy and were not heated.
4. Wider commercial use
5. Better portability as compared to the first generation computers.
6. Better speed and could calculate data in microseconds
7. Used faster peripherals like tape drives, magnetic disks, printer etc.
8. Used Assembly language instead of Machine language.
9. Accuracy improved.
Disadvantages
1. Cooling system was required
2. Constant maintenance was required
3. Commercial production was difficult
4. Only used for specific purposes
5. Costly and not versatile
6. Punch cards were used for input.
THIRD GENERATION COMPUTERS (1964-1975)
The Third generation computers used the Integrated Circuit (IC). Jack Kilby developed the concept
of integrated circuit in 1958. It was an important invention in the computer field. The first IC was
invented and used in 1961. A single IC chip may contain thousands of transistors. The computer
became smaller in size, faster, more reliable and less expensive.

Advantages
1. Smaller in size as compared to previous generations.
2. More reliable.
3. Used less energy
4. Produced less heat as compared to the previous two generations of computers.
5. Better speed and could calculate data in nanoseconds.
6. Used fan for heat discharge to prevent damage.
7. Maintenance cost was low because hardware failure is rear.
8. Totally general purpose
9. Could be used for high-level languages.
10. Good storage
11. Versatile to an extent
12. Less expensive
13. Better accuracy
14. Commercial production increased.
15. Used mouse and keyboard for input.
Disadvantages
1. Air conditioning was required.
2. Highly sophisticated technology required for the manufacturing of IC chips.

Advantages
1. More powerful and reliable than previous generations.
2. Small in size
3. Fast processing power with less power consumption
4. Fan for heat discharging and thus to keep cold.
5. No air conditioning required.
6. Totally general purpose
7. Commercial production
8. Less need of repair.
9. Cheapest among all generations
10. All types of High level languages can be used in this type of computers
Disadvantages
1. The latest technology is required for manufacturing of Microprocessors.
Servers.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIFTH GENERATION OF COMPUTERS
Size –Credit card size microcomputers.
Speed – Billions instructions per second.
Cost – Cost Slightly lower than first generation.
Language– Artificial Intelligence (AI) Languages like LISP, PROLOG etc
Reliability – Failure of circuits in year.
Power– Low power Consumption.
Main Component – based on ULSI ( Ultra Large scale integrated) Circuit .that is also
called Parallel Processing method.
Memory – Optical disk and magnetic disk.
Input Media – Speech input, Tactile input.
Output Media – Graphics displays, Voice responses.
ADVANTAGES
They are very smart machines.
They are extremely fast and have great memory storage.
They can communicate with humans.
They can understand sign language, images, and graphs.
They are less expensive than other computers.
Superconductor technology is used.
They use parallel processing, which enhances their processing capabilities.
They can decide on their own and has the power of reasoning like humans.
ULSI [Ultra Large Scale Integrated] is used inside a microprocessor for better and
enhanced performance.
They are compact and super easy to handle.
Easy maintenance.
Parts are cheaper; hence can be changed whenever required.
They can be installed in remote locations. They are portable.
Produce less heat and therefore can work continuously.
They are reliable machines.
They are used in Forecasting Weather, and Predicting Earthquakes, Volcano Eruptions.
They are used in Research.
DISADVANTAGES
Excessive use of the fifth Generation of computers can make humans over-dependent on
them.
They can spy easily.
Overuse can have a bad impact on health.
They are extensively used in the manufacturing industries; therefore, the fear of losing jobs
is always on the cards.
Their waste can negatively affect the environment.
It has been observed that data and information violations can happen when used
improperly.
Crashed Networks.
These computers are fast, and therefore rumors can spread quickly with a fast internet
connection.
