CHAPTER 1

“THE INFLUENCE OF DECISION-MAKING SKILLS ON CAREER PROGRESSIONS

AMONG GENERAL ACADEMIC STUDENTS”

INTRODUCTION

This research study aims to measure the influence of decision-making skills on the career progression
among general academic students in Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS). This chapter outlines
the background of the study, statement of the problem, scope and delimitation, and the significance of
the study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The educational journey of high school students is a crucial period characterized by various
challenges and decisions, especially when it comes to choosing future career paths. In Ormoc City
Senior High School, like many educational institutions, general academic students face the critical
task of making well-informed decisions about their careers. The influence of decision-making skills
on these students' career progression is a subject of significant importance. Effective decision-making
not only impacts their academic performance but also plays a critical role in shaping their personal
and professional development. Students at this stage encounter a multitude of career options, which
can often lead to uncertainties and hesitations. Many students struggle with navigating this critical
phase of their lives. Thus, understanding the factors affecting decision-making skills and their
influence on career choices among general academic students is essential.

Decision-making skills in the context of career progress among general academic students refer to the
ability to assess, analyze, and choose from various options and opportunities related to their academic
and professional pursuits. These skills encompass evaluating potential career paths, setting goals,
making informed choices regarding education and skill development, and adapting to changing
circumstances. Effective decision-making in career planning can significantly impact a student's
academic success and eventual career trajectory, as it influences the alignment of their skills, interests,
and aspirations with the opportunities available to them.

According to Pascual (2014), study revealed that Filipino immigrants and non-immigrants rely
heavily on their family’s decision-making. Furthermore, she stated that, Sad to say but very few
studies are made to investigate success of career path used in the students of the Philippines, even the
factors that affect the career choice of students. This provides us with limited information on how to
help our students identify the proper career options and course choice they have to pursue in the
future. Students are not properly oriented as to what course to choose out of their interest and skills
but because of the thought that these courses will provide jobs in the future. More so, students are
opted career they think will give better paying job in the future. (Pascual, 2014).
According to Pascual (2014) The report of Labor Force Survey done in January 2012 revealed that
there are around 7.1 million underemployed Filipinos or an underemployment of 19.4%, a result of
congested basic education system and unassisted career decision making. With the given facts, there
is a need for an enhanced educational system and career guidance activities that will help students
choose the appropriate career path based on their interest and competency, as well as the market
demand must be strengthened. (Braza and Guillo, 2015).

According to Gati & Levin (2015) Career decisions often focus on choosing a field of study or
training, selecting a job, moving from one job to another, and when and how to retire. The features
common to all these decisions include comparing relevant alternatives, evaluating them, and arriving
at an acceptable outcome. This outcome typically comprises choosing one of the alternatives (or rank-
ordering them). As career decisions involve gathering and processing information and then using this
knowledge to compare the relevant alternatives, general decision-making models can be applied to
such decisions. A good career decision-making theory proposes procedures, methods, and relevant
techniques for reaching a decision and should allow the derivation of testable hypotheses (Gelatt,
2016).

Selecting a career can be one of life’s most challenging decisions. People often feel overwhelmed by
the amount of information they need to absorb when considering the numerous career paths, they
could potentially follow (Gati et al., 2019). A considerable proportion of ineffective career decisions
among university alumni are accompanied by difficulties in justifying them and a lack of confidence
in their abilities and place in the professional environment. A genuinely conscious choice of
profession and place of future employment directly depends on the individual’s current preferences by
forming a sense of professional identity. Students’ clear understanding of their inclinations, skills, and
abilities – which will continue to develop throughout their lives is essential (Tang, 2019).

This study is conducted in Ormoc City, a vibrant and dynamic city in the Visayas region of the
Philippines. Ormoc City is situated on the western coast of Leyte Island, known for its rich cultural
heritage, picturesque landscapes, and a diverse community. The study specifically focuses on the
students of Ormoc City Senior High School, emphasizing the general academic strand. Ormoc City's
unique geographical and cultural context adds depth to the research, considering the factors that
influence the career decisions of students in this specific locale.

This study aims to measure the influence of Decision-making skills on the career progressions among
students in Ormoc City Senior High school specifically on general academic strands through
quantitative analysis this study will dig a deeper understanding about the influence of Decision-
making skills on career paths of these students, hence the researchers will use numerical data through
surveys to the students. The study will be beneficial to the students, parents and society specifically in
general academic strands.

Furthermore, this study recognizes the critical role that decision-making skills play in shaping the
future of students in Ormoc City Senior High School. Effective decision-making is a fundamental
skill that not only affects academic progress but also extends its impact into various aspects of life,
including personal and professional development.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to quantitatively measure the influence of decision-making skills on the career
progression of general academic students in Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS). It seeks to
determine the extent to which academic performance impacts decision-making skills and how these
skills affect career choices.

General academic students often encounter a multitude of career options during their educational
journey. However, many struggles with making well-informed decisions about their future careers.
These difficulties can lead to uncertainties, hesitations, and even misguided choices. Understanding
the factors that contribute to the indecisiveness of general academic students in making career
decisions is crucial for educational institutions and career counselors to provide effective guidance
and support as these students navigate this critical phase of their lives. (Kirdök O., 2018).

QUESTIONS:

1. To what extent does academic performance impact the decision-making skills of general academic
students in OCSHS regarding their career choices?

2. What are the statistically significant factors contributing to the decision-making abilities of general
academic students in making career decisions?

3. How frequently do general academic students in Ormoc City Senior High School utilize their
decision-making skills in the process of making career choices, and to what statistical degree do these
skills impact their career decisions?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is a descriptive research focusing on the influence of decision-making skills and career
progressions among this student of Ormoc City Senior High School under general academic students
in the first term of the school year 2023-2024. The research methodology involving collecting
numerical data through surveys administered to a sample of Grade 11 and Grade 12 students.

DELIMITATION

Furthermore, this study is delimited to their decision-making skills and career progressions among
students enrolled in the general academic strand. It does not seek to measure these variables in other
strands. The study's sample size is limited to 40 respondents, with 10 students selected from each
section. Additionally, the sample will be restricted to 20% of the total population of Grade 11 and
Grade 12 students.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

them up for success in the future. Teaching decision-making skills in high school offers far-reaching
benefits that impact various aspects of a student's life. Let's explore some of these benefits: Enhanced
Problem-Solving Abilities. Effective decision-making involves considering the perspectives and
