Beethoven also combines motives to create themes. The main tune of his
"Pastorale Symphony" provides an example (Example 3.2). The three motives
that comprise the thematic components of the tune are marked X, Y, and Z
(Example 3.2A). Each is articulated by metric placement (they all are the first
events in successive measures) and duration (they all occupy one measure).
Thus, while they are distinct (and later in the movement each motive appears
separately and is developed) and therefore identifiable, they share musical
features. To be sure, the motives relate to one another not only in length, but
also in general contour-X rises a fourth, Y falls by a fourth (not counting the
large leap at the end), and Z rises a fourth and then falls. Such close
relationships make sense, since unrelated motives would jeopardize the logical
unfolding of the tune. A quick look at the harmony reveals a single F-major
tonic harmony. If we separate the chord tones from the nonchord tones, we see
that each motive outlines the interval of a third, with motive Z outlining two
thirds, the second of which leads directly to the final pitch, G (Example 3.2B).
And if we consider the melodic fluency of this opening tune in conjunction

fifth being the most common (Example 3.9A). The movement begins with a
simple neighbor motion which is imitated at the fifth above, on
G (although stated a fourth lower). The next statement of the motive is at
the original pitch level. Notice that a trill opens the movement. Since most
Sonata em Fá Maior, K. 280, Adagio, trills occur in cadential gestures rather than as the first-sounding melodic
event, we might wish to explore its possible significance. Since trills
W. A. Mozart alternate the given note and the diatonic pitch that lies a second above the
main note, we understand Mozart's reason for beginning the movement
with this ornamental neighboring gesture: It prepares for the series of
upper-neighbor motivic figures that appears in each of the voices. In fact,
the falling-neighbor gesture, heard first in the soprano and subsequently in
alto and tenor, is actually continued in the bass, albeit much more slowly.
And because it alternates and C twice, we see that it is actually a
written-out version of the trill that begins the movement.

Single-Interval Motives
The motives we have discussed so far possess distinct melodic and
rhythmic profiles. Clear pitch contours supported by characteristic rhythmic

explore the power of a single interval. This type of motive can generate both
melodic and harmonic material throughout a piece. When one stops to think
about it, a single interval is highly versatile and can be employed in
multiple musical environments. Consider the perfect fourth which
can fit into any number of tonal contexts. At the same time, this perfect
fourth is also ubiquitous in tonal music and therefore may not be motivic at
all, but just a by-product of melodic and harmonic motions. Composers
B. Haydn, String Quartet in major, op. 33, no. 2, Scherzo
such as Beethoven were drawn to single-interval motives because they
could be used as the impetus to create longer and more involved motives.
Indeed, this very perfect fourth is the seed Beethoven uses to generate the
theme in the last movement of his Piano Sonata in (Example 3.22A). He
also subjects the motive to various transformations, including inversion
Motivos de Intervalo Único (Example 3.22B) and augmentation and diminution, simultaneously
(Example 3.22C).

Definição
A música do séc.
melodia, harmonia, tonalidade e ritmo.
Melodia
- Surge normalmente na voz superior
- As sensíveis adquirem grande destaque; a melodia contém frequentemente 7ª, 9ª, 11ª ou
13ª
fundamental
- É comum a tríade aumentada, em especial no encadeamento V+ - I
Textura
instrumental e vocal
Exemplos
Lord, Have Mercy, moteto WoO. 12, MWV B27, F. Mendelssohn
Exercício 4 – Passacaglia
Compõe 3 variações sobre este baixo em passacaglia. Escreve a 1ª variação a 2 partes, a 2ª variação
a 3 partes e a 3ª variação a 4 partes.

Schumann. Surge como o principal êxito que combina a importância do piano do séc. XIX e o auge
§ Secções recorrem a novos materiais, tonalidades, melodias e

o Como é retratado musicalmente o contraste e o desenvolvimento?
- Ao performer:
o Que implicações têm as repetições numa performance?

Wo steckst du gleich das Köpfchen hin, Good morning, fair maid of the mill!
Als wär’ dir was geschehen? Why do you quickly turn your head away
Verdriesst dich denn mein Gruss so as if something was wrong?
schwer? Does my greeting annoy you so deeply?
Verstört dich denn mein Blick so sehr? Does my glance upset you so much?
So muss ich wieder gehen. If so, I must go away again.
O lass mich nur von ferne stehen, O just let me stand far off
Nach deinem lieben Fenster sehn, and gaze at your beloved window
Von ferne, ganz von ferne! from the far distance!
Du blondes Köpfchen, komm hervor! Little blonde head, come out!
Hervor aus eurem runden Tor, Come forth from your round gates,
Ihr blauen Morgensterne! blue morning stars.

Da kommen die Wolken her, lightning,
Aber Vater und Mutter sind lange tot, The clouds come drifting in,
Es kennt mich dort keiner mehr. But father and mother have long been
dead,
Wie bald, ach wie bald kommt die stille Now no one knows me there.
Zeit,
Da ruhe ich auch, und über mir How soon, ah! how soon till that quiet
Rauscht die schöne Waldeinsamkeit, time
Und keiner kennt mich mehr hier. When I too shall rest
Beneath the sweet murmur of lonely

Forgotten here as well.

Definição
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) escreveu, entre 1957 e 1859, a ópera Tristão e Isolda, em 3 atos, com
música e libreto do próprio compositor, baseado na lenda medieval do séc. XII de Gottfried von
Strassburg.
XVI.
