Lesson Plan

Topic: Knowing and Writing Time on analog and digital clocks

PDE SAS Standard: CC.2.4.1.A.2

Objectives:

- Being able to read both analog and digital clocks

- Being able to write the time shown on digital clocks
- Being able to write the time shown on analog clocks
- Being able to show a certain time on analog clocks

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1. Define and show what analog and digital clocks are and what their differences are

Step 2. Describe to students how to find time on analog clocks, describe what the different hands on an
analog clock mean and what they each show.

- We) Show students different times on a clock and ask the students to tell you what time each
clock represents from a list of multiple options.
- You) Give the students a few pictures of clocks and ask the students to determine the time each
clock shows on their own.

Step 3. Show students how to tell the time on digital clocks

- We) Show students different times on digital clocks and ask the students to tell you what time
each clock represents from a list of multiple options.
- You) Give the students a few pictures of digital clocks and ask the students to determine the
time each clock shows on their own.

Step 4. Teach students the difference between AM and PM and how to determine AM and PM on digital
and analog clocks

- Give the students pictures of clocks and ask the students to tell you whether it is AM or PM
- Ask the students to re-state the difference between AM and PM in their own words to a friend
including how to tell whether it is AM or PM on both analog and digital clocks

Step 5. Review all of the material learned with the students (Ex: the different types of clocks, how to tell
time on both analog and digital clocks and the difference between AM and PM)

- Reinforce the learning with the students, have the students tell a friend one thing they learned
in the lesson. Play different activities with the students to reinforce their learning and to help
them grasp the concept of telling time on both analog and digital clocks.

Materials:

- Fake clocks with moveable numbers/hands

- Lumio presentation about telling time
- Smartboard or interactive whiteboard
Adaptations:
- Giving students with special needs more time to manipulate the clock, determine how clocks
work and what they represent. Give students more time on assessments.
- Give students more practice problems to cement their understanding.

Evaluation: Assessment questions in Lumio pressentation

- 1. David goes to the library at the time shown on the clock. Write the time David goes to the
library.

2. Choose the time that is shown on the clock.

A) 1:00

B) 12:00

C)1:30

D) 12:30

3. Lucy goes to school at 8:00 choose the clock that best represents that time.

4. What was one thing you learned in today's lesson about telling time?
