Teach Teens To Drive Safely - And Save Their Lives
In 2009, 3,466 teenagers died in the
United States from automobile crash
injuries, according to Insurance Insti-
tute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Such
injuries are by far the leading public
health problem among youths 13 to19
years old. Trafc crashes are the lead-
ing cause of death for teenagers in
America. Mile for mile, teenagers are
involved in three times as many fatal
crashes as all other drivers. The crash
risk among teenage drivers is particu-
larly high during the rst months of
licensure.
An IIHS review of recent literature
conrmed that driver age and experi-
ence both have strong effects on driver
crash risk. Crash rates for young driv-
ers are high largely because of the
drivers immaturity combined with
driving inexperience. The immaturity
is apparent in young drivers risky
driving practices such as speeding. At
the same time, teenagers lack of expe-
rience behind the wheel makes it dif-
cult for them to recognize and respond
to hazards. They get in trouble trying
to handle unusual driving situations,
and these situations turn disastrous
more often than when older people
drive.
Research shows which behaviors con-
tribute to teen-related crashes. Inex-
perience and immaturity combined
with speed, drinking and driving, not
wearing seat belts, distracted driv-
ing (cellphone use, loud music, other
teen passengers, etc.), drowsy driving,
nighttime driving and other drug use
aggravate this problem.
The National Highway Trafc and
Safety Association (NHTSA) recom-
mends a multi-tiered strategy to pre-
vent motor vehicle-related deaths and
injuries among teen drivers: Increase
seat belt use, implement graduated
driver licensing, reduce teens access
to alcohol and increase parental re-
sponsibility.
* Keep your hands on the wheel.
* Keep your eyes on the road.
* Keep your hands and eyes away
from your cellphone while driving.
You need to teach safe driving be-
havior from the beginning, says Ly-
man Munson, vice president of risk
services at Firemans Fund Insurance
Company. As the parent, you can start
by modeling safe driving behavior

whenever you drive your children, from the time they are
infants.
Give teens an edge by teaching them some basics about cars
and the rules of the road early, well before they hit driving
age. Ease them into driving with short trips in familiar ar-
eas, at low speeds, in daylight and with an adult. Choose a
safe car that is predictable in its handling and easy to drive.
Insurance carriers often offer good student and safe driving
discounts for teens. Parents can include these incentives in
the discussion regarding safe driving. Firemans Fund rec-
ommends parents use devices such as Cellcontrol to disable
cellphone use while driving.
Munson also suggests parents talk to their teens about safe-
ty issues and the rules they are setting. Explain each one of
your rules and the consequences for breaking it. Write up
a contract with your teen driver to make sure they drive by
the rules and drive as safely as possible. Include the most
important issues. Heres a sample:
Spell out the rules:
1. Alcohol: Absolutely no alcohol
2. Seat belts: Always buckle up
3. Cellphone/texting: No talking or
texting while driving
4. Curfew: Have the car in the drive-
way by 10 p.m.
5. Passengers: No more than one at
all times
6. Graduated drivers license: Fol-
low the states GDL law
7. Parental responsibility: Set your
house rules and consequences

Lights Out, Stink Bugs In

(ARA) - Last fall Carol Coleman
couldnt open the front door to let her
dogs out because thousands of stink
bugs were blanketing it.
It was terrifying to see thousands of
bugs packed together trying to get in-
side my house, she recalls from her
home in Kennett Square, Pa. I had to
call for help because my dogs and I
were trapped.
Coleman resorted to pesticides, but the
stink bugs resisted and still got indoors
to overwinter with hundreds appearing
again in spring to munch and mate and
mow down her garden.

Declaring war, she switched tactics
and placed several stink bug traps
around her home this summer. Im
catching as many as I can outside be-
fore fall, she says. And Im setting
up indoor traps throughout my attic
and basement ready to catch and kill
them. This is bug war!
Colemans case may be extreme, but
shes not alone in battling stink bugs
hiding in attics, crawling up curtains,
dive-bombing the dinner table and ru-
ining gardens.
If you think youre safe, beware. Re-
searchers predict that if one out of 10
homes had stink bugs last year, nine
in 10 homes could have them this sea-
son. According to Dr. Tracy Leskey, a
research entomologist with the U.S.
Dept. of Agriculture, adult stink bugs
are moving inside and looking for
places to spend the winter.
Now is the time to ght stink bugs,
says Rod Schneidmiller, president of
Sterling International, developer of the
RESCUE! Stink Bug Traps. Whether
you use a homemade trap or one of
ours, do something this fall to break
the cycle and reduce their numbers.

By Halloween, most stink bugs will
have moved inside to hibernate. Ex-
perts say a good indoor stink bug trap
with an LED light works best to attract
stink bugs indoors.
To prevent stink bugs from taking over
your home this winter, follow these
tips from the pros:

* Seal up your castle. The rst line of
defense is to close your windows and
doors, and seal up any openings where
the bugs can enter. They can atten out
and slip through the cracks to hide in
your house for winter.
* Create a barrier outdoors. Outdoors
stink bugs are attracted to scent. In-
doors they move to light. Place traps
on porches, posts and trees around
your home. New traps on the market
catch both young and adult stink bugs
with a pheromone attractant that lures
them from up to 30 feet away. Cole-
man says she placed her traps around
her home and near her garden and is
catching stink bugs by the hundreds.
* Check traps frequently. Make certain
your traps are catching stink bugs. If
not, move them to another spot. Be
vigilant, says Doug Oster, author of
Grow Organic. You have to out-smart
them.
* Pick them off. When you see them
on your plants, deck or curtains, pick
them off with a tissue, drop in a cup of
soapy water and ush down the toilet.
Do not release outside. These arent
lady bugs, says Oster. A dead stink
bug is the only good stink bug.
* Seek and destroy them indoors. Once
they migrate indoors, the bugs con-
gregate in warm dark areas. Indoors
they are attracted to light, not scent, so
place your traps in attics, living areas
and basements where the bugs gather
to hibernate through the winter.

Stink bugs naturally walk up so they
collect in high points on your house,
says Leskey. So, be sure to check be-
hind drapes, vents and even ceiling
tiles.
Once theyre indoors, move fast to
capture and dispose of the bugs, says
Oster. Light is what works indoors,
he says. RESCUE! just introduced a
new Stink Bug Light - an attachable
LED proven to lure the bugs into the
trap. The light easily snaps onto the
Stink Bug Trap and plugs into either a
wall outlet or battery pack.
* Dont vacuum. If you vacuum, youll
scare them and they will emit a foul
odor that will linger in your vacuum
cleaner and home. If you do, change
and dispose the bag immediately.
This is an all out bug war, and like
Coleman says, Dont wait like me to
be trapped by stink bugs in your own
home!

Career Growth Might Mean Looking Outside Of Your Current Location
(ARA) - In recent years, many people have focused on simply getting or keeping a job - and given the persistently high
unemployment gures, that has been a reasonable reaction. But focusing on simply maintaining can cause problems in the
long run of your career. Those who are focused on the future, whatever their line of work, know that to really be secure,
the key is to develop and expand your career.
If youre facing a tough job market in
your chosen eld, it might be time to
consider looking elsewhere for better
prospects. But even for those who are
in high demand, like physicians and
other medical professionals, a change
of location can offer new opportunities
to grow their career - and have a bit of
adventure at the same time.
To make the big move, research is a re-
quirement. Be prepared to spend some
time exploring the benets of moving
to and living in other cities or states.
Look into housing prices, job rates, the
diversity of companies offering jobs in
your eld and the local economy. And
because you wont be spending all of
your time in the work environment,
its important to look into the kind of
lifestyle thats available to you in dif-
ferent destinations.
For Dr. Christopher Jensen, the high
demand for physicians in Alaska was
a draw, as was the opportunity to ex-
plore a new lifestyle in Americas last
frontier. I took a road trip to the Yu-
kon as a medical student, Jensen ex-
plains. That planted the seed of the
idea to move to Alaska once I nished
with training.
When it comes to moving away from
where you currently live, the experi-
ence is different for everyone. If you
are already a transplant, it might not
be hard to move again, but if youve
grown up in the area, you might feel
strong ties to your current location.
However, even if the process is chal-
lenging, consider how it could pay off
- literally and guratively - in the long
term.
Dr. Raymond Wilson, who had been
practicing medicine on the East Coast,
decided to look elsewhere because of
the unique local challenges he faced
in his profession. I was interested in
moving my practice from a location
considered to be a relatively physi-
cian-unfriendly environment, Wilson
says. I was hoping to nd a new loca-
tion with both a more reasonable envi-
ronment for professional practice and
a great location for lifestyle in my lei-
sure time. Alaska t both of those very
well. The professional environment is
much improved.
When youre seriously considering a
move to bolster your career, its a good
idea to establish a contact in your new
destination. On a personal level, you
can ask your friends if they know any-
one in the area that you might want to
meet.
And on a professional level, consider
using a service that can connect you
with local jobs. For instance, Alaska
Physician Jobs is staffed
by local Alaskans who
help connect physicians
moving to Alaska with
jobs and other profes-
sional resources. And
since theyre familiar
with the area, they can
also help by giving ad-
vice on adapting to it.
The physician recruit-
ing team absolutely fa-
cilitated the process,
Wilson says. They
also employ outside
consultants to help identify commu-
nity needs, and I was fortunate to meet
with the consultants during a visit.
Jensen concurs, saying that having a
resource on local lifestyle helped him
adapt. I moved here from the East
Village in Manhattan, Jensen says. It
was a huge culture shock. Although I
expected that this would be the case, it
was still more signicant than I had an-
ticipated. Everything is more difcult
to do up here because you are effec-
tively and literally off the map as far
as the rest of the U.S. is concerned.
Its well known that adaptability is
a desirable attribute that companies
look for in their employees - making
a move to further your career imme-
diately singles you out as someone
whos willing to take on a challenge
and make improvements. A change of
location can open up the possibility of
professional - and personal - growth,
which can lead to better job security,
improved earnings and even a better
work-life balance.
