Introduction to FREE Activity Sheets for Professional Development Attendees

Suggested activities for Touching/Counting Patterns:

There will be an exceptionally wide range of students having difficulty in math at the upper grade levels. Many
will have mild to severe disabilities of various kinds. Some will simply be missing basic skills taught earlier. A
few will have dyscalculia—a total inability to understand math concepts. The ways in which you approach these
students will vary by your assessment of the issue(s). The more severe the issue, the greater the emphasis
you must place on tactile/kinesthetic activities. For that reason, we recommend that you peruse the free activity
sheets and instructions for lower grade levels in this section. You may print any or all of the activities that would
be appropriate for your students. The suggested activities below are designed for students without severe
disabilities who require math remediation.
1. Explain to students that you are going to show them a different way to compute math problems. By this
point in their lives, there will be students with negative attitudes about math and you may meet resistance.
Reassure them that this way of doing math will make it easier and more understandable than it has ever
been before.
2. Hand out the first activity sheet. Explain that the numerals on the paper have TouchPoints. Those
TouchPoints could represent anything: apples, beans, pencils, etc.
3. Show students that the numeral one has one TouchPoint and is touched and counted “one”. Ask them to
write the number one on the lines next to the TouchPoints.
4. Repeat the process on the numbers through 5. Most students in fourth grade and beyond should be able to
master the first five numbers in one sitting.
5. Ask students to take a piece of paper and write each numeral, draw the TouchPoints, and write the
Touching/Counting Patterns beside the TouchPoints for 1 through 5. Watch for mastery of the Touching/
Counting Patterns.
6. Repeat the process with the second activity sheet. Be aware that these numerals with double TouchPoints
will require more repetition. Students may have to write them several times to master the patterns. Always
watch and check for mastery as they work. Correct wrong patterns before they become habitual.
Tip:
Supply items such as beans, counters, or dried shell pasta in groups of ten. Have students count out the items
and place them over the TouchPoints on each numeral. Ensure students place the correct number of objects on
the numerals without going over to check for quantity comprehension.

Suggested activities for TouchMath Beginning Addition.

1. Give students the first addition activity sheet.
2. Explain that they will be adding one to each number, which may be easy, but they need to touch and count
for practice.
3. Tell students they will always start counting the TouchPoints on the greater number first. Ask them which
number is the greater number.
4. As students complete each problem they should write the answer, then repeat the problem and answer.
5. Observe students to see that they are touching and counting by starting with the greater number and
continuing to count in the correct patterns. As you observe them, make a note of any problems you see.
For instance, is someone counting the seven incorrectly? If so, review that pattern with the group after their
activity sheets are completed.
6. The puzzlers have no TouchPoints. Have students touch and count on the numerals to help them
understand they can complete the activity even when the TouchPoints don’t appear on the numeral.
