Of the many miracles attributed to Santa Rosa de Lima, the best known are: the protection of

the city of Lima from the Dutch corsair Joris Spitberg, rain of scented flowers in front of Pope
Clemente IX, healing of the sick with the image of the Child Jesus or talk to animals. In 1617,
Santa Rosa de Lima took a vow of chastity and entrusted herself to God for life, living a life of
extreme austerity and rejecting the offers of marriage she received. That same year, on August
23, 1617 and at the age of 31, Santa Rosa de Lima died of tuberculosis. After showing signs of
intense spiritual precocity, at the age of twenty she took the habit of a Dominican tertiary, and
dedicated her life to caring for the sick and children and to ascetic practices, soon spreading
the fame of her holiness.
