A beautiful gift to humanity:

We should not distort it
A.P.J Abdul Kalam

The aim of science is to develop inquiring minds and curiosity, acquire knowledge,
conceptual understanding and skills to solve problems and make informed decisions

Life is incredibly varied, yet based on common processes. Intrinsic motivation arises
from a desire to learn a topic due to its inherent interests, for self-fulfilment,
enjoyment and to achieve a mastery of the subject.

Academic Window 2018-19 is planned as a skill-based questionnaire that

emphasizes on thinking skills, experimental skills and application skills.

It consists of the following units– Index, Exam wise syllabus, Glossary, Chapter
names and sample papers for Tests and Exams

This is composed and compiled on the basis of the latest syllabus prescribed by
CBSE and will be updated as and when required .

CHAPTER 4 - SORTING MATERIALS INTO GROUPS

MATERIAL GROUPING
Material: The matter of which an object is
made is called material.eg Glass, steel, wood
etc.
Classification: The process of sorting and
grouping things according to some basic is
called classification. Object can be classified
on different basis. i e. shape, material used,
uses etc.
Basis of grouping: Materials can be grouped based on similarity and differences in their
property. Different type of material have different properties such as
appearance, solubility, transparency, conductivity and behavior towards a magnet.

LUSTER

The property of a substance that describes how shiny or lustrous it is.

A piece of paper is dull because it does not reflect much light, but the chrome on a car is
lustrous /shiny because it reflects a lot of light. Another dull thing is an eraser
and another shiny thing is ______________.

TRANSPARENT TRANSLUCENT OPAQUE

5
* Any substance with a lower density than
liquid water will float in water.
* Wood, oil and wax are examples that
float.
* A metal boat can float because its
shapes provides areas that can fill with
air, which is less dense than water.

Soluble- when one substance (solute) is dissolved by another substance (solvent)”

like dissolves like” Example: Salt is soluble in water.

Insoluble-When one substance does NOT dissolve in another. Example: Oil is soluble in
water.

other and any three pairs of substances where one substance remains insoluble in the other
substances. (3)
