All employees who handle compressed gas cylinders must be trained in the safe
operation of these cylinders. This procedure outlines the minimum requirements for the
safe handling, storage, and use of compressed gas cylinders.
Scope
This procedure applies to all employees who handle compressed gas cylinders,
regardless of department or job title.

Storage
Store compressed gas cylinders in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and
heat sources.
Store full and empty cylinders separately.
Secure cylinders to a wall or other structure to prevent them from falling over.
Label all cylinders with the type of gas they contain.
Use
Before using a compressed gas cylinder, inspect it for damage. Do not use a cylinder
that is damaged or leaking.
Use the proper regulator and fittings for the type of gas you are using.
Open the cylinder valve slowly and carefully.
Never exceed the pressure rating of the regulator or hose.
Close the cylinder valve when you are finished using the gas.
Emergency Procedures
If a compressed gas cylinder leaks, evacuate the area immediately and notify
emergency personnel.
If a compressed gas cylinder catches fire, use a dry chemical fire extinguisher to
extinguish the fire.
Training
All employees who handle compressed gas cylinders must be trained on the safe
