Topic: The challenge of future economic: landfill or incinerator

Introduction:

Population increase resulted with larger demand for goods and services. It leads to
the introduction of various products to cater the need of the consumer society. As a
consequent, more resources will be discarded and disposed off as waste. Malaysia
as rapidly developing country generates more than 30,000 tones of municipal solid
waste (MSW) everyday. Open dump, sanitary landfill, incineration, composting,
grinding and discharge to sewer, compaction, hog feeding, milling, dumping,
reduction and anaerobic digestion are the option of solid waste disposal. In Malaysia
there are 261 landfill sites where 111 numbers of them had been closed leaving only
150 still operating. Out of this, about 17 unsanitary landfills had been closed and 32
will be upgraded into complete sanitary landfill. In future more sanitary landfill will be
opened to cater for increment of solid waste produce. Landfill is economical and
uses simple disposal method. However, the highly polluted leachate that is produced
by the landfill becomes one of the greatest environment concern (NurShaylinda et
al., 2012). Due to the issues associated with landfilling, government proposed
incinerator to contribute the problems. Small-scale facilities implemented in the
tourist islands namely, Langkawi, Labuan, Pangkor and Tioman to manage waste
disposal. Incinerator in Langkawi Island was the only able to recover the energy from
combustion which has able to generating of electricity. However, high level of
moisture reduces the calorific value which increases fuel cost (Fauziah et al., 2007).

Objective:

1. To do assessment for choosing landfills or incinerator technology to reduce

waste.
2. To identify development of landfills or incinerator, which one are more
economic.
