about this resource

This resource was designed to help teachers supplement their
math curriculum, by providing a variety of options to teach,
reinforce, practice, and assess students’ understanding of
fractions. This resource includes:
1. Teaching Pages
2. Worksheets
3. Journal Prompts
4. Word Problems
5. Quizzes and a Final Fractions Assessment
6. Plus, other activities!!
These fraction pages were designed with 4th grade standards in
mind. However, they would also work great in 3rd grade to
challenge students and introduce them to more advanced skills.
These pages can also be used as a review for 5th graders, to help
prepare them for the 5th grade fractions standards.
This product is divided into 6 parts and covers all of the 4th Grade
Common Core fraction and decimal standards.
• Part 1: Understanding Fractions (reviews 3rd grade standards)
• Part 2: Equivalent Fractions
• Part 3: Comparing Fractions
• Part 4: Adding & Subtracting Fractions
• Part 5: Multiplying Fractions
• Part 6: Fractions & Decimals

teacher prep:
• Fraction Cards: Copy and cut one set onto cardstock. (If you have more than 30
students, you may need to make an additional copy of one of the pages.)
• Name Tags & Scripts: Copy onto card stock. There are two to a page, so copy one for
every two students. You may want to copy the Name Tags and Scripts back to back.
You will need to figure out how many of each nametag you will need, based on which
fractions you plan to assign and how many students you have. Students will get a name
tag that corresponds with the fractions they are assigned. If using all 30 fraction cards,
here is what is recommended:
o Thirds: 1 copy o Fifths: 2 copies o Eighths: 4 copies
o Fourths: 2 copies o Sixths: 3 copies o Tenths: 5 copies
• Directions & Fraction Pieces: There are two to a page, so copy one for every two
students.
• Sorting Mat: Copy one for every student.
• Anchor Chart: Copy the anchor chart pieces on colored paper and create an anchor
chart for sorting the fraction cards. Sample pic on the next page. ©Rebecca Rojas @Create Teach Share
comparing fractions to one-half
lesson sequence:
1. Distribute fraction cards, name tags, and scripts to students. If you have more
than 30 students, you may want to assign certain fractions to more than one
student, or have some students work in pairs.
2. Have students shade the fraction circle on their cards to match the fractions
they were assigned. (These will be used again later in the lesson.)
3. Next, have students complete their fraction name tags based on the fractions
they were assigned.
4. Ask students to determine whether their fractions are less than, equal to, or
greater than one-half. Then have them complete and review items 1 and 2 on
their scripts. They should be ready to explain. They will use these scripts to
share and discuss their fractions with their classmates. Explain that item 3 will
be left blank and will vary, depending on the fractions of their classmates.
However, they should be ready to use the sentence frames provided when
comparing their fractions with others.
5. Time to mingle! Have students move around the room and use their name tags
and scripts to tell their classmates the name of their fractions and how their
fractions compare to one-half. They should then discuss how their fractions
compare to each other. Have students mingle until they have each shared with
about 5 to 6 of their classmates.
6. After mingling, it’s time to share as
a whole group. Have each student
come up with their fraction card
to share the name of his or her
fraction and how it compares to
one-half. While they’re up there,
have them place their cards on
the anchor chart according to how
the fraction compares to one-half.
7. Finally, have students work
independently or in pairs to
complete the sorting activity. Sample Anchor Chart
