Fire and Explosion Hazards
Fire and Explosion Hazards
Particle Technology
Lecturer: Professor Clive Davies,
School of Engineering and Advanced Technology
Dust fires and explosions can be dangerous and can have catastrophic
consequences.
However, with the knowledge that fine particle dusts are potentially combustible
and explosive, the potential dangers can be mitigated by good engineering design,
good engineering practice, and good management.
You are strongly advised not to attempt to repeat any of the experiments shown in
the YouTube video-clip demonstrations used in this lecture. (YouTube videos might
not be available to some viewers).

The second video (sugar) outlines the factors causing dust explosions and it shows the catastrophic consequences of poor
management and design in industry. Also, many of the operations used in the handling and storage of powdered materials can be
seen in this video.
