.

In a mad man's world, happens every day we don't understand why the rules can't
change. We don't want to be a moment of silence, we don't want be an early grave. When
we walking through the halls not all of us are brave but we just want to be safe.
Sexual assault squeezes you out. Like bloodletting. Your body, your soul, your mind,
your will to live cracked shells of a once-vivavious human being, crumbling down around
you. And you may not even realize its happening until it’s too late. Or you perhaps think
yourself deserving of devastation. When the last few precariously dangling structures
collapse, and the dust finally settles, your tortured ghost is fated to haunt the earth.
The word sexual assault/harassment does not appear once in victims. Women put
themselves in danger. They’re not asking for it, and anyone could take advantage. A rape is
what happened. It’s unusual circumstances, the accusations, “a he-said, she-said situation,”
the inevitable result of “a bad choice.” These euphemisms, like all clichés, have been
repeated until they have lost all meaning, stones turned smooth by a river. Because sexual
assault is a form of sexual harassment, all instances of sexual assault are also instances of
sexual harassment. However, not all instances of sexual harassment are severe enough to
qualify as sexual assault.
Like perpetrators, there is no qualification for who can be the victim of sexual
harassment. Although women have been the most visible voices, men have also been the
subject of harassing behavior. Men and women can both be harassed by someone of either
the same or opposite sex, so neither gender nor sexual orientation prevents someone from
becoming the victim of harassment. Although men experience sexual harassment at much
lower rates than women, sexual assault against males is still very real. Sometimes sexual
violence against men is ignored altogether and male victims of sexual assault are
discouraged from reporting what has happened to them, for fear of being told they are
unmasculine.
Taking immediate action, however, is not as simple as it seems. While reporting or
speaking out against harassment of any sort appears to be the most simplistic and practical
solution, the reality is far more unforgiving. When conducted interviews and group
discussions with girls and young women, as well as with parents, education experts,
psychologists, local activists, development partners, and national and local government
officials. The reform should include provisions for victim assistance, protocols and
guidelines for all government officials responding to violence against women, adequate
funding for agencies carrying out the reforms and for monitoring their prevention and
enforcement activities. The hope is that, if people are more aware of sexual harassment
and how casually it is sometimes treated, then tolerance for it will decrease and support for
victims will rise.
