Course Description
Introduction to Biology is designed to provide students with an overview of essential biological concepts. The goals of
the course are to build understanding of core biological principles and to apply this knowledge for future advanced
learning in biology and medicine. Topics covered include: scientific inquiry; chemistry of life; cell structure and function;
genetics; evolution; ecology; and an overview of the diversity of life. The fundamental concepts the course cover
include: biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, cell structure and function, metabolism and enzyme activity, cellular
respiration and photosynthesis, DNA structure, meiosis and mitosis, Mendelian genetics. The course is designed to
prepare Bagarot students for advanced courses in the Biological areas at Al-Quds University, Medicine School.

Course Objectives
- To establish an understanding of the major historical events in biology and their impact on science
- To describe basic cell structure, biochemistry, metabolism, nutrition, reproduction, and genetics
- To demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of cellular inheritance
- To demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of molecular genetic technology
- To demonstrate skill in basic laboratory methodology, such as microscopy, and the careful analysis of
laboratory data and results
- To demonstrate Knowledge the biological process common to life
- To outline the structure of the biomolecules found in all living organisms
- To demonstrate knowledge of the process of inheritance
- To describe how DNA, RNA, and proteins are working in a living cell
- To identify the different stages in the process of cell division in both somatic and germ cells
